School Entrance Exams (7+, 8+, 11+, 13+)
- I have worked with many students, building the confidence and the style required to succeed in entrance exams to a wide variety of independent and grammar schools including Harrow, Uppingham, Oundle, Westminster, Eton, KCS, UCS, City of London, The Royal Hospital School and CRGS. I am pleased to say the students I have worked with have had a very high success rate.
- I also have experience with 13+ scholarship preparation where I feel it is important to focus on both exam technique, but also interview skills so students can really stand out. I have prepared students in History, English and Maths for scholarship papers at Harrow and Eton.
GCSE (Maths, English, History, Sciences)
- Having worked for countless hours with students preparing for their GCSEs I know the techniques that are required to confidently succeed in exams. I have worked with students over year-long stretches to prepare for their GCSEs, but also in ‘crash-courses’ closer to exam dates.
AS/A-Level; University Admissions (History and Economics)
- I have also loved the challenge of working with older, more advanced students. It wasn’t so long ago that I myself was taking part in A-Levels and UCAS applications, and I remember the difficulties. Having studied History at university I am also able to provide insights to higher quality analysis that can bring the top grades. In Economics I look to help students improve essay writing and exam technique. As I achieved full marks in my Economics A-Level, I am aware of the tricks and skills required to write really great answers.
I was born in New York, but grew up in London and Suffolk and I took my A-Levels at Ipswich School where I achieved an A* and 2 As in Economics, History and Maths. I then went on to study History at the University of Exeter. After a brief hiatus working and teaching abroad, I have returned to London and I am currently studying for my Master's Degree at SOAS, University of London. I have been tutoring for over five years, and find the challenge constantly rewarding.
I am a strong believer that each student requires a different approach, dependant on their own needs and learning style. However, I believe there are several approaches which are universal, such as patience and adaptability, and thus always part of my approach. I look to try and improve students' revision and exam strategies so as they are able to work confidently on their own. I believe I am engaging and passionate, and I try to make lessons fun, whilst also attempting to stir a real interest in the subject.
What I do when I am not tutoring
I am currently taking part in a Msc at SOAS, University of London. When I am not tutoring or studying I enjoy music and most sports (especially cricket, football, rugby and cycling).
'Jake tutored my son over a 4 month period prior to his GCSEs in English Language and Literature, History and Mathematics. I would thoroughly recommend Jake as a tutor, he is an inspiration and a great communicator, forming a really good rapport with his student that encourages enthusiasm for the subjects. My son really enjoyed his sessions with Jake and did extremely well when his exams came around. He is polite and punctual and I have no hesitation in recommending him to you' - Claire
