I began tutoring when I was at secondary school, helping friends who struggled and also others in my local area, Buckinghamshire. I loved helping my clients realise they didn’t have to struggle with Maths and could easily achieve good grades with the right guidance. During my undergraduate degree at the University of Leeds I participated in the Mathematics Tutoring Scheme helping fellow maths students from all year groups. I helped people understand difficult concepts and increase their confidence in the subject.
Since graduating, I have provided private tuition across London from 11+ through to GCSE and A Level, working with different exam boards such as Edexcel, AQA, OCR.
I was raised in Buckinghamshire, located just outside of London, where I attended the Royal Grammar School in High Wycombe. It was there, my secondary school teacher sparked my fascination in Maths - through engaging lessons coupled with a friendly approach. I studied Maths, Further Maths, Biology and Physical Education at A-Level achieving A*AAA.
I went on to have an amazing experience at the University of Leeds, graduating with a 1st in Mathematics and Finance. I’ve been tutoring Maths to students for over 8 years and delivered thousands of lessons. I tutor Maths to a variety of ages from primary aged students all the way through to GCSE and A Level.
In first-lessons I carefully select questions designed to identify a student’s misconceptions in a topic and then tackle them head on. I also take time to get to know the student, their hobbies and interests as well as thoughts and feelings towards Maths. Building a good rapport with students is important to me to create a productive and positive teaching environment.
In my sessions, I regularly use visual and interactive teaching modalities and pay attention to how my students respond to different modes and then adapt based on their learning style.
I consistently design my lessons with my students success in mind - to stretch them without them feeling stressed. I aim to increase motivation and positive feelings towards Maths (which is not always a given!).
Using assessments I can track students' progress and use this information to plan lessons and ensure the students their education is moving in the right direction.
I am also completing a MSc in Neuroscience part-time at King's College London. Tutoring aside, I enjoy watching sport, playing tennis and socialising with friends.

''Richard is an excellent tutor who tutored me throughout my A levels helping me to achieve an A grade. I had a very good rapport with Richard and looked forward to his tutoring lessons. He was good at breaking down tough concepts into small chunks for me which helped me learn well and always had a clear plan for every lesson. I would highly recommend Richard.” (A-Level Student)
