I started teaching shortly after university, quickly becoming a Head of Department in an outstanding school in the West Midlands. After that I became a Head of Sixth Form in a Birmingham school, which was the start of several senior leadership roles in different schools, culminating in Deputy headship. Although, I enjoyed being able to make a difference through my leadership of the curriculum, it took me away from teaching. So I recently decided to step back into middle leadership and took up my current role as a Head of Computer Science.
I have over 30 years teaching experience in the state and independent sector. I am currently Head of Computer Science at an Eton Group school. Prior to that, I was an Academic Deputy Head in a Multi Academy Trust. My first degree was in Modern History, which I studied at Christ Church, Oxford. Later in my career, I switched disciplines to Computer Science.
In Computer Science I have many years experience in teaching GCSE and A-level courses, including OCR and AQA GCSE & A Level Computer Science.
I am also a marker for AQA A-level Computer Science and previously have marked OCR GCSE Computer Science. Marking experience is essential in helping students to understand what examiners are looking for, how to maximise your score on a particular type of question and also how to avoid common mistakes.
I like to help build up students' confidence by establishing a positive working relationship built on trust.
I use the insight, experience and expertise that I have gained over my career to help students to apply their knowledge skilfully so that they can unlock any exam question.
Having worked in a variety of different schools, in both the state and the private sector, I am unfazed by any situation. I have supported students with a wide range of abilities, too; from students needing an A* to realise their Oxbridge dream, to students that struggle with elements of the GCSE course.
For all the reasons that I have stated above, I believe that I can help any student at any level or at any point of their academic career.
I am currently Head of Computer Science at Marlborough College, where I teach from Year 9 up to and including Upper Sixth.
I am currently teaching AQA GCSE Computer Science and OCR A-level Computer Science but I also have several years experience of teaching Computer Science for other boards. I am an A-level exam marker for AQA and OCR GCSE courses.
''Tim is an excellent classroom practitioner and is highly respected by students, staff and parents. He is highly innovative and always seeking to improve. His introduction of personalised revision and examination timetables for students, led to all students (including his own) making much more efficient use of their time in the run up to their examinations. He led by example, running intervention sessions for his subject radically improving student chances of success and securing very positive examination outcomes.'' (Headmaster)
