I have spent the last few years since university tutoring various students of different ages. I have specialised in Mathematics and English, in particular up to and including the 13+ level.
I also tutor GCSE and IGCSE Mathematics. I have experience with OCR, Edexcel and AQA, and will be happy to explore any other exam boards which are required.
I have had a number of successes in the past few months:
Student passed 13+ pretest to Harrodian
Student passed entrance exam into his first choice school (Whitgift)
Student was successful in the 11+ pretests for Wesmintser School
Two separate students were accepted into King's following their success at the entrance exam
Student passed entrance to Emmanuel school earlier this year
Student made it through to the waiting list of St. Pauls for a 13+ entry
Student recently received an unconditional 13+ entry offer to Brighton College

Student offered a place at Merchant Taylor's and Haberdashers (2020)
I was born in London and grew up in SW6. I have played and studied music since the age of four, and having finished my A Levels at Westminster School in Mathematics, Further Mathematics and French, I went on to study a degree at Leeds comprising two very different but equally exciting subjects - Mathematics and Music. Since finishing my degree I have been tutoring alongside writing and performing music of varying styles. I have tutored in subjects across the board but I tend to specialise in Mathematics. I have taught children of all ages and abilities, some students as young as seven years of age, and others studying for their A Levels.
Having taught a multitude of students of varying levels and abilities, I always feel that my tutoring methods must be adapted to the child based on personality, interests and capabilities. That said, I endeavour to spark interest and excitement in those that I teach, so that the learning process for them becomes a pleasure rather than a chore.
It is important to me to engage and excite my students in a way which is sometimes overlooked in the classroom. My main aim is to build confidence in my students and to allow them to tap into their individual strengths to enable them to tackle areas of difficulty. I especially find that when teaching a subject like maths, which is often stigmatised in schools as being particularly difficult and easy to fall behind in, a one on one dynamic enables me to really spend as much time as is necessary on tricky concepts. My policy is that 'no question is too big or too little' and I encourage students to ask me anything, even if they feel that they 'should' know the answer, or perhaps were unable to ask their school teacher. It is important that no student is ever made to feel inadequate for not knowing something. I aim to build a high level of confidence in my students that will enable them to take mathematics in their stride, to be well equipped to tackle forthcoming concepts and problems in the classroom environment and, above all, to enjoy their studies.
What I do when I am not tutoring
I dedicate a lot of hours of my week to tutoring and when I am not tutoring I write and perform music.
I have studied music for most of my life, primarily as a pianist. I attended the Royal College of Music Junior Department for a number of years and spent a lot of time at school and university honing my songwriting and production skills. I have been writing music for the past five years or so, exploring styles such as electronic dance music and experimental music, and I now perform as a solo singer-songwriter with my own original material.
I am also an avid Chess player.
We just wanted to let you know that our son has now received an offer from Eton, in addition to offers from Winchester and Hampton. Plus a conditional offer from Harrow and on the waiting lists for Westminster, St. Paul's and City of London. Not bad. Thank you for all your work with our son - it clearly made a difference. No doubt we'll be back in touch with no 2.
"My son's first session with Hugo was a roaring success. He came out exclaiming that it was “such fun!” Music to my ears! Hugo is delightful, full of energy and very engaging with my son. Could not be more thrilled." Mother of previous student.
"Hugo is great. My son has really enjoyed his first 2 sessions and says the sessions are interesting and fun and time flies by. What more could we ask for! Thanks for helping us find Hugo, he seems like a great fit."
'Hugo was a marvellous tutor and always prepared the boys really well for their exams. Hugo was more than competent in each subject and was a really good teacher and motivator. After a long day at school it was difficult to get the boys to do so much work but Hugo always managed to keep them focussed. He was patient but firm''. (Mother of 11 year old twins 2015)
''Hugo is an extremely considerate and capable teacher. His gentle nature and patience make him a favourite with even the most reluctant students. Hugo is conscientious and dependable making every effort to accommodate the most demanding clients. Hugo is an exemplary teacher and mentor. I highly recommend him''. (Agency Head, West London Tutoring Agency 2015)
''Hugo helped both my girls weekly with a variety of maths problems. He made them feel comfortable asking questions and exploring areas in which they were previously lacking confidence. Thanks for all your help Hugo!'' (mother of two, 11 and 13 2015)
''Thanks for everything you have done with our two boys - you helped them both get into their schools with flying colours (Ryde School, St. Felix) and you have filled in all the gaps in their knowledge over a very short space of time!'' (Parents of two boys, 11 and 14, moved here from USA and each a year behind the syllabus, 2015)
''Thanks for all your help with Louis - his reading and English skills have drastically improved and we now feel he is extremely well prepared for his new school''. (Parents of 9 year old English student 2015)
''Thanks for all your help over the summer with our two children. You help keep them inspired and challenged!'' (Mother of 9 year old maths student and 13 year old maths student - studying for GCSE 2015)
''We have been very impressed with the progress Rohan has made since Hugo started tutoring him. Rohan felt at ease with him straight away. Hugo, is punctual, friendly and very organised. Hugo listened to our concerns about Rohan and then set to work on them. Rohan has clearly overcome any weaknesses he may have had as over the past few months as his test scores are very high! As I have mentioned, we have really been impressed with Hugo’s approach, that we have now asked him to tutor our daughter who will be sitting her IGCSE’s next year! Rohan wants to hold on to him for IGCSE’s too!” (Student, 13+ Maths, gained entry into Merchant Taylor's and Haberdasher's - 2020)
Khaled is doing well with Hugo and had benefited a lot from the tuition (IGCSE student, 2020)
Patrick thinks Hugo is a fantastic help. I feel strongly that Hugo will be able to keep Patrick going and raise his confidence in maths (13+ student, 2020)
