I attended Withington Girls' School in Manchester where I became interested in student journalism and creative writing. I left with a good set of GCSEs and IGCSEs (8A*S and 2As) to attend Xaverian Sixth Form College. I found the transition between the two institutions somewhat disconcerting as I grew to realise the relative lack of support network at the college and how this impacted upon my peer group. This made me realise how fortunate I had been to go to a secondary school where high academic potential was realised, encouraged and nurtured, a place where being enthusiastic about academia was valued. It was at this point that I first experienced tutoring, helping course-mates with proof-reading and essay-writing. I left college with 3 A levels (English Literature with an A*, History with an A* and Psychology with an A*) and two AS levels (Biology and General Studies). I obtained full UMS points in English Literature for GCSE, AS level and A2 level.
I have carried this subject forward to my degree (English Language and Literature BA) at Christ Church, University of Oxford. I attained a scholarship in my first year for high academic performance as well academic prizes for my submitted work on Shakespeare. I graduated in 2017 with a First Class degree. I am now starting an MSt in English 1550-1700 at Oxford, being one of the top applicants for my course and being nominated for a Humanities Division scholarship. I am available for tutoring in English Literature and English Language for all levels up to A-level and IB, in addition to teaching English as a foreign language. I am also able to tutor A-level Psychology and Modern History.
I find that patience and attentive listening are key skills as a tutor in enabling understanding and instilling a positive work ethic in young people. I am also alert to the fact that current examination assessment objectives demand specific techniques and demonstrations of skill from candidates and therefore that a coherent understanding of these specific exam techniques can be crucial to securing the highest grade.
I therefore adapt my tutoring to the specific requirements of each pupil in accordance with their personal requirements, and ensure that they receive the most relevant assistance possible for their course or examination.
Most of all, I feel that tutoring should be a motivating and enlightening experience for every student, as a facilitator to achieving one's highest potential
I am happy to teach:
- English as a second language
GCSE English (AQA, OCR, Edexcel)- language and literature
- AS/A2 English Literature (AQA, OCR, Edexcel)
- IB English Literature/English Language and Literature
What I do when I am not tutoring

'Anna was one of the best tutors I've had! She always had a great passion for every aspect of her teaching and was always extensively prepared with lots of great resources for each lesson. Not only did Anna guide me in subject-based tasks but she also assisted me with writing university applications. She provided me with some excellent tips for exam technique which allowed me to perform to the best of my ability in both my final IB examinations and the mock trials. She helped me achieve my best and strive to think outside the box!'
(Henna, IB HL student)
'Anna is an incredible tutor who not only taught my son the fundamentals of poetic techniques, but also kindled his interest in English literature. She masters crucial exam techniques and helped my son achieve an excellent mark in IB English, a subject he struggled with'
(Anita, mother of IB English SL student)
'Anna was exceptionally helpful in helping me carry out my application to Oxford University. Not only did she assist greatly in the drafting process of my personal statement, offering extensive and insightful advice on how it could be improved; she also provided invaluable support in my preparation for sitting the ELAT admissions test. If the confidence and ability she inspired in me are anything to go by I am certain she will be a wonderful tutor to others'
(Ella, A level English student)
''Anna was an amazing tutor! She was always fully prepared for the lesson with a wide range of materials. If it wasn’t for her I wouldn’t have done so well for my IOC, other coursework and ultimately my final exam!''
(Yvonne, IB SL student)
