Thomas is an accomplished Economics teacher with over 30 years experience in the classroom. Across this time, he has been Head of Department at a number of well known schools. For over 30 years I have been fortunate to have taught and been Head of Department in several very well known and successful academic schools including: The Perse Cambridge; Bromsgrove School; Wolverhampton Grammar and Bishop Vesey’s. I have enjoyed giving one to one support session and online tutoring to numerous student for over 5 years now. Many of the students choose to study Economics at the top Russell Group Universities including: LSE; Durham; Warwick; St Andrews, Oxford and Cambridge. I am proud to say that one of my students achieved the top 1st at Oxford and has won numerous prizes along the way. I have also gained much experience from my many years marking for various exam boards.

Biography

I was born in Sabah - the Northern Malaysian State on the Island of Borneo. My first School had possibly every nationality and ever since I have thrived in multicultural societies. I then moved to Hong Kong and was sent to a UK boarding School in Edinburgh where I studied Economics, Maths, Business and Art at A level before studying for an honours course in Economics in the City of Glasgow. I then did my post graduate degree in Economics at Durham. Throughout this I also played rugby for Scotland at School age levels (captaining U16s). I have also a keen interest in all music genres especially the 1980s and including Jazz & Blues Piano.

Approach to Tutoring

My online sessions are varied and designed for the you as an individual. However generally speaking I will start with asking you if you have any questions or need any help before going on to a new topic. Each topic will cover: definitions; application to real life and data; any relevant diagrams with explanation; any other analytical points with evidence; use of economic theorists (such as Smith, Keynes & Hayek) and ways to evaluate for the higher level response answers. Once the topics have all been covered (well before the final exams), we focus on exam technique by looking at past paper questions specific to your course and level showing you what examiners expect.

When not tutoring

I have many interests outside of Economics. I have been an advisor for many start ups and well established organisations; I am a regular investor in the FTSE, NASDAQ & NYSE; I play the piano mainly for self enjoyment but also for some contracted events; although less fit and healthy than I used to be I enjoy the gym and regular walks with my mad cocker spaniel Oscar. I still paint and draw too from my A level art days. I am a keen chef too and do most of the home cooking. I ban any processed foods wherever possible. I have enjoyed travelling having led several World challenge and Sporting trips abroad including: South Africa & Namibia; Australia & Bali; Mount Kinabalu and Argentina. As a family we are still trying to visit all the major European cities and sites.
