Geography research interests:
Human Geography - specifically urban environments and the economics of Geography.
Physical Geography - climate, tectonic activity and earth hazards.
English research interests:
I am particularly strong on 20th Century English and American literature. That said, I have also completed university modules on Shakespeare, Chaucer, Old English and Victorian literature. I like to read anything and everything, ranging from 19th Century poetry right through to graphic novels.
As for teaching experience, the majority of my work to date has been private, one to one sessions, which I have been doing since September 2014. I also work in after school 'intervention' sessions, helping groups of 2-3 students at a time work through core material. I have also taught English at a summer camp in Spain.
I am a personable, highly motivated MA graduate with experience tutoring Geography, English, and specialist entry exams (e.g. TSA, Critical Thinking, interview preparation) at: 11+, 13+, 16+ KS3, GCSE, A-level, IB and degree level (since Sept 2014).
I completed an MA in English: 1850-present, passing with Merit. My primary research focus was on literature and urban spaces (hence the English/Geography Crossover)
Prior to that, I achieved a 2.1 in BA English at the University of Leicester. As for secondary education, I attended Dr. Challoner's Grammar School, where I completed A levels in English (A), Geography (A), and French (C).
I have been tutoring since September 2014. I have experience working with individuals, groups and as a classroom assistant. I have provided services to private clients and schools alike, so am comfortable in all teaching environments. I am adept at working with students of all levels – I relish the challenge of helping somebody to improve; whether that is to get a struggling student to the all-important pass grade at GCSE or to help a high achiever get an A* at A-level. As someone who has progressed through the grammar school system (with the aid of tutoring), I am passionate about sharing my knowledge at 11+ level too.
Beyond the education sector, I also have experience working in technology, publishing and youth marketing. Alongside tuition, I am a keen writer, and am working on my second novel. I am incredibly ambitious and aim to pass on the same drive to succeed to my students.

19/02/2019: Thinking Skills Assessment (TSA)
My priority is getting students interested in the subjects I'm teaching. I am a firm believer that if you enjoy the subject you are studying, you will succeed. This philosophy greatly informs my tutoring.
I aim to tailor my tuition to each individual student, and use a variety of engaging resources in order to get the best level of participation. I am quite forward-thinking in my approach - I often use visual aids or online materials to supplement my core teaching. Sometimes I use more traditional approaches such as working through past exam questions and developing technique, as this is particularly effective in the lead up to exams. Either way, I hope to make things as enjoyable for the student as possible, while ensuring that they are receiving the highest level of tuition.
Finally, I like to push my students – if that means getting them to write practice essays in-between sessions or working through past papers, I will strongly encourage them to do so.
What I do when I am not tutoring
Fiction writing is my biggest non-academic interest. I have just finished writing my first children's book.
I love music and am teaching myself the piano
I am an avid sportsman. Football and golf are my strongest suits. I also enjoy skiing in the winter.
Callum is an brilliant tutor. He has managed to cover the 13+ syllabus with my son and go above and beyond the requirements to ensure he is well prepared. He is extremely inspiring and wonderful to work with. (Parent of 13+ Student)
He's fantastic! Just what we were hoping for - my daughter seems more confident already & more cheerful about Geography. (Father of Year 13 Student)
From Keystone clients:
''It was a great success and I know that Jake is planning to book more sessions with him in the weeks to come. A very lovely man''.
- Stephanie, parent
''Callum is absolutely great. We'll probably ask if he is free to help us again over the summer”.
- Annie, parent
''We are very impressed with Callum. He does not spoon feed, but makes his students think of the answers; a much more productive approach. He is excellent with teaching the examination techniques. In addition, he is a very pleasant young man who has a very pragmatic approach which is very helpful. Overall, a very commendable tutor who motivates and has the ability to make his subject interesting. We will be booking him in the future.'' - Suzanne, parent
''Callum has just left after his 2nd session. He's fantastic! Just what we were hoping for - Georgia seems more confident already & more cheerful about Geography. They have already achieved a fair amount which is wonderful.
Thanks so much for finding him for us'.'

From another tutoring agency I work for:
''I wholeheartedly recommend Callum Brown. We have been consistently impressed with his punctuality, his flexibility, as well as his positive and patient attitude towards the pupils he tutors. Callum has shown professionalism working with groups of students on a regular basis, all of whom enjoy having him as a tutor. Again, I can't speak highly enough of Callum and his ability to engage children and teenagers.
He acts as a private tutor, visiting pupils both in their homes, and in schools. (For our agency), He works predominantly with pupils aged around 13-18 years. Callum is an incredibly personable individual, who shows excellent diligence and professionalism in his work. He is trusted to prepare and deliver lessons on a weekly basis, and has done so consistently since joining. He is an intelligent individual and possesses the skills to communicate this knowledge to others.'' - Johnny, owner of a previous tuition agency I worked for
