I have tutored students at a variety of levels, from 7+ up to degree level, each with great success. I have tutored students in the UK, Hong Kong, China, Russia and South Korea for schools including St Paul's, Eton, Wycombe Abbey, Brighton, Harrow, Westminster and more. Scholarship experience includes the King's Scholarship at Eton, as well as scholarships at Harrow and The Challenge at Westminster. For Admissions I tutor English, Maths and Reasoning, as well as the setting subjects of Latin and Science if desired. My work in Admissions is comprehensive, tackling all subject areas as well as Interview skills.
At GCSE (including 9-1), I have tutored across most boards with great success for both English Language and English Literature. The vast majority of my students improve their expected grade by two boundaries, with most receiving an 8 or 9 at GCSE (A*). I am also an examiner for the IGCSEs, giving me a direct insight into the marking process. My students are aided by the top-level materials which I create for each individual student, personalised to their needs. For GCSE I also tutor RS and Philosophy, for which I have a personal passion.
At A-Level and IB I have equally tutored extensively, with success demonstrated in the excellent results of my students, most of whom go on to receive an A* (A-Level) or a 7 (IB), allowing them entry to the universities of their choice. Consequently, I also have first-hand expertise in a wide range of texts, speaking and writing types, which for IB has proved extremely useful for the different tasks set (both written and oral). For A-Level it means I am adept at providing critical texts for students, helping them improve their own essays and consideration of broader academic contexts.
I have also helped a large number of students with interviews and personal statements, including preparation for Oxbridge. For students applying to US universities I also teach the SAT.
Growing up in London, I attended NLCS, at which I achieved five A-Levels in English, History, Politics, Classics and Philosophy. I attained a place at Trinity, Cambridge from which I graduated with a double first in English, top of the year in poetry. Immediately after my undergraduate degree, I completed my MPhil in Education and Literature. During this time I worked with students in a number of top London schools, and honed my own teaching skills within a demanding and highly academic environment.
Among other academic successes I have a number of published papers, including for Faber on T S Eliot, research credits, extensive teaching experience, and accolades. After my degrees I immediately began tutoring, having discovered a love for teaching during my research into Literature and Education. Since 2013, I have been tutoring professionally, working with numerous students in a wide range of countries, and enjoying oustanding international success.
I believe strongly that academic success comes not only from a firm grasp of analysis and sensitivity to texts, but also from a sense of personal fulfillment in the subject. As such, I always endeavor to help my student discover their own interest in the subject, as well as their own style of learning. No two students are the same, nor should they be treated as such! I am a highly patient and friendly tutor, and always strive to make my lessons enjoyable and relaxed, whilst maintaining my pupil's personal drive.
Alongside tutoring, I am a successful selling artist who specialises in oils, both still-life and portraiture. I also enjoy ballet, gymnastics and the theatre in London. A keen learner and lover of knowledge, I have appeared in the past on BBC quiz shows.
"My daughter has passed this stage with an interview on 30th January. Kate was absolutely brilliant! We couldn’t recommend her highly enough." (Mother of pre-test student)
"Kate was absolutely BRILLIANT!!! 5 STAR. So perfect for my daughter. Thank you so much!!" (Mother of Year 5 student)
(Mother of IGCSE student) - 'My daughter is getting on very well with Kate and is really enjoying the sessions. Her confidence in English is growing in leaps and bounds, as is her joy of the subject. Thank you, Kate.'
(A Level Student) - 'Kate is very well-organised, adaptable and has a really good knowledge of many texts that allows me to have a greater understanding of the context of my play. She has helped me to think and analyse more critically of the language features used in a text, which has allowed me to have a better understanding my author's intentions or effect created within the text. Overall, she's one of the best tutors that I've ever had.'
(Mother of A Level Student) - Well prepared and professional. Encouraged my son to stretch his analytical skills. Great start, thank you Kate!
