I have 5 years' tutoring experience, and have now been working as a full-time private tutor for some time, which I am very much enjoying.
I have taught a wide variety of subjects at different levels, including a range of languages (English as a Foreign Language, French, Spanish, Italian, German, Portuguese, Latin) mainly, but not exclusively, for GCSE and A Level.
I also have experience teaching English, Maths, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning to students who I have helped apply for many different schools, mainly at the 11+ and 13+ levels, as well as English and Maths to younger students (Year 1 to Year 4).
I have also revised and given feedback on students' personal statements for different university applications, particularly to Oxford and Cambridge, as well as provided interview practice with detailed comments, ratings and suggestions for improvement.
Many of my students have had great success and achieved the highest grade possible after being predicted a lower one. One particular student of French achieved a 9 in his GCSE after initially being very low on confidence in the subject and telling me that he was absolutely terrified of doing his speaking exam.
Born and bred in London, I am far from the typical Londoner in that I am a polyglot and have learnt over 15 languages - of which I speak 10 conversationally or better.
I have grown up in North London, but went to secondary school at St. Paul's Boys, in Hammersmith. After achieving 11 A*s in my GCSEs there, including 5 A*s in foreign languages, I went on to study Italian (A*), French (A), Maths (A*) and Economics (A) for A Level, as well as doing Further Maths (A) up to AS Level.
I then completed my first degree in French and Italian at the University of Cambridge, where I obtained a 2.1, followed by a further Masters in Translation and Interpreting at the University of Westminster.
Since then, I have focused on tutoring and look forward to continuing to do so!
I believe that flexibility is very much key to tutoring. I therefore tailor my approach to each individual student and their particular goals.
However, I invariably try to transmit my enthusiasm for the subject to my student, as finding motivation is a big part of learning.
As a speaker of over 10 languages and with considerable language knowledge, I find demonstrating my passion quite easy!
Keeping students aware of why their subject is useful and how it can help them to reach their objectives is also one of my strengths.
What I do when I am not tutoring
I am currently a full-time tutor, and have been for almost a year. I am therefore very committed to this field.
In my spare time, other than learning languages, I am very enthusiastic about sports and literature and have often bonded with students over our mutual passion for these.
“Mr Dhananjay Talwar worked as a trainee teacher and assisted with our French classes in grades 8, 10 and 12…covering vocabulary work, grammar exercises, discussions, pronunciation, oral exercises and debates. Dhananjay has shown himself to be reliable, mature, responsible and very passionate about his area of interest i.e. modern languages. It was a delight for us to have him at the school and we would welcome him back at any time in the future.” - Principal of BD Somani International School, Mumbai
“Mr D Talwar has taught my son GCSE Spanish for the past several months. He has made the lessons very enjoyable and has covered the content of the course comprehensively. He has turned up for the lessons well prepared with a variety of materials that has engaged my son. His clear explanation of the materials has contributed to my son achieving excellent marks in his coursework.” - Father of GCSE Student
“Dhananjay tutored our daughter in French in the year leading up to her GCSE examinations. Overall, he had an incredibly positive impact on her attainment levels in French - culminating in her getting the top grade. Dhananjay has a rigorous & conscientious approach to tutoring. I have always found his motivation real & commitment sustained. He meticulously prepares each lesson targeting all areas of the curriculum systematically. He also has a very thoughtful & patient manner. In French lessons, he made an across the board positive impact - be it grammar points, introducing good structures to improve the quality of writing & devoting effort to improving her conversational accent. He provided interesting resources to trigger interest in the subject & spent a lot of time on practice papers nearer the examination. Dhananjay is a talented linguist and gifted student academically. He has deep subject knowledge - as such he is very well equipped to handle the French curriculum at both GCSE & A levels. I would recommend him highly as a French tutor.” - Father of long-term student (GCSE/A Level)
“An outstanding tutor who inspires great self-confidence in his pupil, who works with great calm and efficiency, utterly convincing, a true model for a young student.” -Mother of 11+ Student
