I have been a full time tutor since September 2013 and since January 2017 I tutor exclusively online via Skype.

I teach students from the ages of 8 to 21. Living in Dubai meant that I have had exposure to various syllabuses. I have helped children to prepare for the 11+ and 13+ Entrance Exams for the different schools in Dubai and also in London. I also teach university students who have Mathematics modules incorporated in their degree (eg. Psychology) but struggle with concepts that they may not have seen for many years.

I established a very good reputation in Dubai and I relied purely on word of mouth and recommendations. I taught 33 students every week on a one-to-one basis at their individual homes. Now that I have moved back to London, I have started Online Tutoring so as to provide continuity for my Dubai students.

Since moving back the UK I have provided online lessons to London based students who attend some of the top schools in the country such as: Colet Court, St Pauls, Winchester, Godolphin and Latymer and Francis Holland School. I have a strong understanding of the vigorous syllabi at these schools and the high standards that they expect from their students.

Biography

I am a Mathematics Graduate and I am also a part qualified Actuary. I graduated from the University of Nottingham in 2006 with a 2:1 in Mathematics BSc (Hons).

I cannot deny it: Mathematics has always been a passion of mine!

After graduating from University I went into the Actuarial profession, taking on Actuarial exams that took my love for Mathematics to new heights! I was in this field from 2006 to 2012 working for RBS Insurance, AIG Life and Munich Re. I moved to Dubai in the summer of 2012 where I continued to work at AIG and also at an American actuarial consultancy, Milliman. I was dealing with statistical models, complex calculations, statistical coding and it was all fun for a while!

After some time I was left feeling unsatisfied. It prompted me to remember the questions asked as 16 year old: ''What do you want to be when you grow up?'' A Maths Tutor? No, of course not. What 16-year old wants to be a Maths tutor? I wanted to be a Children's TV Presenter! Not for the fame but rather because they would entertain children with stories, art, science, etc. turning “boring” things into something that is fun. This passion was then transferred to the little faces via the TV!

And so it was in April 2013, whilst working as an Actuary, that I began my tutoring career in Dubai freelancing for three top tutoring companies. I quickly realised how much I enjoyed teaching Mathematics, and watching the faces of students change as they realise that Mathematics is something they don't need to fear but something they can love!

By September 2013, I left the Actuarial field to work as a full time tutor. Gone were the days that I would force myself out of bed to go to an office and sit in front of spreadsheets all day. Now I hop, skip and jump out of bed so that I can see the smile on a student’s face as they realise they CAN tackle the question, they CAN get this right, they CAN achieve the grade that they want and eventually... they CAN do this all by themselves!

I moved back to Battersea, London in December 2015. I believe that Tutoring is my calling and in the next few years, I hope to establish myself as one of the most reputable Mathematics tutor within London and also Internationally.

Personal Approach

I am a fun loving individual who is extremely passionate about Mathematics and helping children learn it in a fun way. I really enjoy showing students that it is actually an easy subject and building up their Mathematical confidence is an important part of my lessons. I believe that the main key to be successful in Maths is self-confidence!

I have excellent communication skills and am very approachable. Students are always comfortable in asking me as many questions as they need to in order to understand the subject. I always remind them that “There is no such thing as a silly question! The more questions you ask the quicker you will learn”.

Each child is different which means that I tailor each of my lessons to suit each student. I have many different teaching techniques to ensure that I am able to explain, what may seem like a complex topic, in a simple and effective manner.

Mathematics is a maze of many concepts. Too often students try to memorise them which requires intense hours of repetition with little understanding. I like to bring these concepts into an understandable reality so that the student does not have to memorise. They now understand it. Once they understand it, they do not need long hours of intense repetition as it is now engrained in their way of thinking. I believe that you cannot forget something you understand but it is very easy to forget something that you have simply just memorised.

I like to think that instead of just teaching Mathematics, I inspire students so that eventually they begin to like Maths and no longer need my support.

I have been a Mathematics tutor for the past four years and have helped many students in Dubai where I offered Face to Face lessons. However at the end of 2015 I moved back to London much to the disappointment of my clients. As a result I looked into Online tutoring and spent many months researching and learning the best set up for my style of teaching. I now believe that I have established an unrivalled set up.

Moving to London may have seemed like a barrier but I am constantly getting many new enquiries from families who have heard how efficient and productive my Online lessons are. My Online reputation is now stronger than my Face to Face reputation. Over the last 18 months the demand in Dubai for my Online lessons has grown significantly and I have been receiving many new requests for Online Tutoring from students who have never met me or had face to face lessons with me before. Word has also somehow spread to other countries too and I now also have students in France, Switzerland, Italy, Russia, Hong Kong and Singapore.

Since my online set up allows me to provide a more efficient and better quality service compared to face to face lessons I have now made the decision to fully move away from face to face lessons and I now only offer online lessons even to my students in London.

I tutor students at some of the top schools in the UK such as Colet Court, Eton, Winchester, Cranleigh and Charterhouse, all of whom have said that they prefer my online lessons to the face to face lessons that they have experienced in the past with their previous tutors, as they are more convenient and efficient.

What I do when I am not tutoring

I enjoy crocheting and spending quality time with my daughter, nieces and nephews when I am not tutoring.

Nils is an AWESOME tutor!

When we first contacted her I was quite weary of online tutoring however IB predictions were bound to be set based on the summer exams and I desperately needed to understand Calculus. I was not failing mathematics however I despised the subject and my grades always seemed to be a 6 tilting towards the 5 grade boundary rather than the 7.

Nils did not only teach me mathematics, but rather revolutionized my method of studying. In fact, before meeting Nils, I was tackling questions based on memorization which meant that all unfamiliar problems were greatly perplexing. Nils taught me how to UNDERSTAND maths; she taught me the logic behind the formulas rather than telling me to learn the formulas themselves and would never hesitate to re-explain something if I found it puzzling. The skills she taught me were also greatly versatile. Parallel to Mathematics I took Physics SL and, being the latter deeply rooted in mathematics, I was able to use the same methods and concepts that Nils taught me in my Science subject too!

Thanks to her help I was predicted a 7 in the summer. However, it was because of a continued tutoring that I was able to achieve a 7 in the final thing. In Upper Sixth Vectors and Probability were very daunting but learning with Nils meant that I made a huge progress; in the end I ended up being my favourite Standard Level subject!

She was always available, I would send her images of the problems I didn’t understand throughout the week and we would work through them together during tutoring. Moreover, looking over mathematics with her gave me confidence. In fact, feeling more secure in maths ensured that I could focus more on my Humanities Higher Level Subjects; if I achieved 44 points in the end it was mostly because of Nils!!

We first started using Nilantheny Narendran to tutor our son in Maths in Dubai in 2013. At that time his Math exams scores were not very good and Nils was coming to our house for face-to-face lessons. We moved back to London in 2014 and coincidentally Nils moved to London around the same time so we continued the Maths lessons here and over time transitioned to having most of his lessons being done online.

Over the years our son’s Maths skills and exam results improved considerably and we were very pleased that he recently received an A in Maths on his Common Entrance Exams. He has gone from Maths being his worst subject in school to this being his best result for his CE exams and Nils deserves a lot of credit for those CE results. We were initially a bit skeptical of the online lessons but they have worked very well for our son. The technology works great overall and then immediately after each lesson Nils sends in lesson notes that our son can review later on during his own time. Our son was also able to send Nils messages between lessons with items where we wanted help and to let her know what he wanted to focus on in the next online lesson.

Nils is a great teacher and had the perfect balance between being patient with our son during the lessons but also being demanding that he do his homework and concentrate in each lesson. She has been very reliable over the years and we would recommend her to anyone who needs Maths tutoring.
