I have been a full time tutor since September 2013.
I teach students from the ages of 8 to 21. Living in Dubai meant that I have had exposure to various syllabuses. I have helped children to prepare for the 11+ and 13+ Entrance Exams for the different schools in Dubai and also in London. I also teach university students who have Mathematics modules incorporated in their degree (eg. Psychology) but struggle with concepts that they may not have seen for many years.
I established a very good reputation in Dubai and I relied purely on word of mouth and recommendations. I taught 33 students every week on a one-to-one basis at their individual homes. Now that I have moved back to London, I have started Online Tutoring so as to provide continuity for my Dubai students.
I currently also provide face to face lessons to London based students who attend some of the top schools in the country such as: Colet Court, St Pauls, Winchester, Godolphin and Latymer and Francis Holland School. I have a strong understanding of the vigorous syllabi at these schools and the high standards that they expect from their students.
I am a Mathematics Graduate and I am also a part qualified Actuary. I graduated from the University of Nottingham in 2006 with a 2:1 in Mathematics BSc (Hons).
Institute of Actuaries: CT1, CT2, CT3, CT4, CT5, CT6, CT7, CT8 and CT9
STEP I: Mathematics (Grade 2)
A2 Levels: Mathematics (A), Chemistry (A), Physics (A)
AS Levels: Further Mathematics (A), Economics (A)
10 GCSEs: 6 x A* (Mathematics, Double Science, French, Geography, Religious Education, 3 x A (English Literature, English Language, Business Studies & Graphics), 1 x B (Art)
I cannot deny it: Mathematics has always been a passion of mine!
After graduating from University I went into the Actuarial profession, taking on Actuarial exams that took my love for Mathematics to new heights! I was in this field from 2006 to 2012 working for RBS Insurance, AIG Life and Munich Re. I moved to Dubai in the summer of 2012 where I continued to work at AIG and also at an American actuarial consultancy, Milliman. I was dealing with statistical models, complex calculations, statistical coding and it was all fun for a while!
After some time I was left feeling unsatisfied. It prompted me to remember the questions asked as 16 year old: ''What do you want to be when you grow up?'' A Maths Tutor? No, of course not. What 16-year old wants to be a Maths tutor? I wanted to be a Children's TV Presenter! Not for the fame but rather because they would entertain children with stories, art, science, etc. turning “boring” things into something that is fun. This passion was then transferred to the little faces via the TV!
And so it was in April 2013, whilst working as an Actuary, that I began my tutoring career in Dubai freelancing for three top tutoring companies. I quickly realised how much I enjoyed teaching Mathematics, and watching the faces of students change as they realise that Mathematics is something they don't need to fear but something they can love!
By September 2013, I left the Actuarial field to work as a full time tutor. Gone were the days that I would force myself out of bed to go to an office and sit in front of spreadsheets all day. Now I hop, skip and jump out of bed so that I can see the smile on a student’s face as they realise they CAN tackle the question, they CAN get this right, they CAN achieve the grade that they want and eventually... they CAN do this all by themselves!
I moved back to Battersea, London in December 2015. I believe that Tutoring is my calling and in the next few years, I hope to establish myself as one of the most reputable Mathematics tutor within London.
I am a fun loving individual who is extremely passionate about Mathematics and helping children learn it in a fun way. I really enjoy showing students that it is actually an easy subject and building up their Mathematical confidence is an important part of my lessons. I believe that the main key to be successful in Maths is self-confidence!
I have excellent communication skills and am very approachable. Students are always comfortable in asking me as many questions as they need to in order to understand the subject. I always remind them that “There is no such thing as a silly question! The more questions you ask the quicker you will learn”.
I am now solely an online tutor. Since my online set up allows me to provide a more efficient and better quality of service compared to face to face lessons I have now made the decision to move fully to online lessons. In addition to my students in Dubai, Zurich and Singapore now my London based students can also benefit from my online lessons.
I appreciate that some people might be sceptical about online lessons but I believe that I have established an unrivalled set up. I tutor students at some of the top schools in the UK such as Eton, Winchester and Charterhouse, all of whom have said that they prefer my online lessons to the face to face lessons that they have experienced in the past with their previous tutors, as my lessons are more convenient, productive and efficient.
Each child is different which means that I tailor each of my lessons to suit each student. I have many different teaching techniques to ensure that I am able to explain, what may seem like a complex topic, in a simple and effective manner.
Mathematics is a maze of many concepts. Too often students try to memorise them which requires intense hours of repetition with little understanding. I like to bring these concepts into an understandable reality so that the student does not have to memorise. They now understand it. Once they understand it, they do not need long hours of intense repetition as it is now engrained in their way of thinking. I believe that you cannot forget something you understand but it is very easy to forget something that you have simply just memorised.
I like to think that instead of just teaching Mathematics, I inspire students so that eventually they begin to like Maths and no longer need my support.
What I do when I am not tutoring
When I am not tutoring I spend my free time keeping fit and looking after my nieces and nephews. I enjoy running around Battersea Park and going for City walks around London.
“We were looking for a Maths tutor for our son, Alex, 17, who was sitting his IB diploma.
After talking to Nils, I was a little bit reluctant to have classes online. We were used to having classes face to face. After his first lesson, we were very positively surprised and for Alex there was no difference in having lessons Online or face to face.
He had approximately 10-15 hours of lessons with Nils, what was very beneficial for his IB preparation.
Nils, as a tutor, is very professional and has a very good approach. You can feel that she is teaching because she loves it and she enjoys to help others. The only regret we have is that we met Nils only a few weeks before the IB exam, but even in this short period of time, Nils did a great job in helping Alex.
From September, our younger son, Adrian, 14, who has no problem in Maths, will start lessons with Nils once per week, to become one of the best maths students in his grade
I can strongly recommend Nils for any Maths students.”
Father of IB Student (ACS, Cobham)
We are very happy with Nils, she is a very good tutor and according to my son, the way she teaches is very professional and efficient. Having classes on line with Nils are as good as face to face.
"The online lessons with Nils are excellent. With the camera set up and the white board used by Nils the whole experience is in some ways, better than the face to face. Nils is also the best Maths tutor my son has ever had, by a mile, his words not mine. She is very diligent, good at explaining concepts, taking Scott through problems, great follow up and reinforcement and is generally a lovely person too!" Father of previous student.
"Nils has been tutoring my 16 year old twins for their GCSE Maths. She is an excellent mathematician, and an excellent teacher, with an exceptional ability to communicate and explain difficult topics in a way that makes them easy to understand. She is highly organised, coming to lessons with prepared questions, and making notes for my children, so they have them to refer to afterwards.
Nils is unfailing pleasant to deal with, and always reliable. Her communication with parents is particularly good: she always drops me an email after the lesson, letting me know what topics have been covered, as well as any issues and future goals.
I highly recommend Nils. In fact, I have asked her to continue tutoring my children for their Maths A-Level.” (Mother of GCSE Maths students)
Mother of GCSE student and School Registrar:
I would like to highly recommend Nilantheny as a Tutor. I first met Nils almost two years ago when she tutored my own 15 year old daughter. She was exceptionally well prepared for every class and really kept my daughter focussed in all classes. Our daughter was predicted an E at GCSE and achieved a high B in her final examination. This improvement was down to the commitment, teaching style and preparation of Nils.
I am the Registrar of one of Dubai’s largest and most successful British Schools. This year we achieved 100% A*A in our early entry GCSEs, having been open for just 12 months. Our families are highly demanding and very well educated, accepting only the best when it comes to schooling. Nils tutored many of our students prior to them taking our entry exam and has continued to support them. We never hesitated to recommend her to our families who wanted further support for their children in order to access our rigorous curriculum.
Nils is a lovely lady, dedicated and enthusiastic in her teaching and I can certainly highly recommend her.
Father of Year 5 and Year 7 students:
I can unequivocally recommend Nils as a maths tutor. Our two boys (aged 13 and 11) were tutored by Nils for 19 months for one hour each week.
Her impact was distinctive on a number of levels. In the short term, the boy's school Math test results improved markedly and in the longer term, she has established a solid platform of self-confidence in maths. It is noteworthy that the boys now see maths as fun and interesting.
She has achieved this through -
• Quickly establishing an intuitive understanding of not just their capabilities but how each one learns - and then modulated her teaching approach and interactions.
• Established clear parameters of expectations and monitored goals.
• Encouragement and the installation of self-disciple. The boys were keen to work for her, and she helped them to realize that they were ultimately working for themselves.
Father of GCSE student:
Nils is a great Maths tutor, very energetic, extremely patient and had a way of communicating with our daughter that raised her confidence and ability way above where she started from. As parents we were looking for someone that could go past rote tutoring and inspire our daughter to really move past hating and fearing maths to enjoying it. Nils provided that inspiration...Results speak for themselves, from an average C and B grade Maths student, our daughter just passed her GCSE Maths with an A and is now all set to take on A Level maths - We couldn't be more pleased!
Mother of IB Student:
I am so pleased with my son's incredible improvement in Maths since he began tutoring with Nils and he is actually smiling about Maths for a change!
Nils is much more than a tutor, she is an extraordinary educator. When she began tutoring my son, she identified his areas of weakness in his maths knowledge and filled the gaps until he had a solid mathematical foundation. Now as he continues to progress through High School, Nils properly and thoroughly explains and practices new concepts which has led to his positive approach to maths.
When Nils told us that she would be relocating to London, we were distressed as we thought we were going to lose this fantastic tutor...until she told us that she would be giving online tutoring lessons. My son finds the online lessons to be just as beneficial as the face to face ones. Nils has a great system for her online lessons which enables her to provide an excellent tutoring experience.
When Nils takes on a student, she honours that commitment impressively. Detailed notes from the online lesson arrive minutes after the session is completed and she provides amazing support should the student have a significant difficulty via Whats App.
I would highly recommend her and I'm so grateful to her for building my son's confidence and ability in Maths.
I started the online lessons with Nils in December 2015 after being with her in person for almost 6 months. I love the online lessons as they are very helpful and I feel like I am able to learn more as I can take away the notes from the lessons. The computer set up that Nils has is very efficient and she is able to answer every question I have easily. As I do Standard Level IB Math which is a very challenging course, I feel like Nils and the online lessons have been a huge help in increasing my confidence with Maths, as well as most importantly helping me to understand it more and achieve higher levels. I would highly recommend Nils and her online lessons to anyone who needs the extra push with Maths.
When I first was put in contact with Nils, I was in the middle of year 12 and achieving merely a level 4 in all of my tests. A few months later and I’m currently working as a strong level 6 student. Without Nils' help and organization, countless past papers and worksheets, I wouldn't be in this good position in maths now or even thinking about achieving a level 7 in my upcoming exam in May. I do online tutoring with Nils, which I was sceptical of trying at first, but in fact I think it’s better than face to face tutoring! After each session, I have detailed and annotated notes from the work we did in the session which I can look over and review at any time while revising for my exams. Nils has truly helped me and given me more confidence with answering questions. I would definitely recommend online tutoring to everyone.
Mother of Grade 5 and Grade 2 students:
Ms Nils has been tutoring my two daughters, Nicole and Rebecca for a term. Nicole is aged 10 and in grade 5 and Rebecca is aged 7 and in grade 2.
Ms Nils assessed the level of each of my daughters and identified topics they needed to focus on and skills they needed to develop. She then developed specific lessons for them. Each lesson was very well structured and Ms Nils was always prepared. She thoroughly explained each topic and was very patient with my daughters ensuring that they always understood what they were being taught.
Ms Nils kept me informed of their progress and also provided me with tips to help them improve their math skills. She also provided them with extra help and support with school work when required.
During the time in which Ms Nils tutored my daughters I saw a massive improvement in their confidence levels and in their results. Consequently my daughters started enjoying math and looked forward to their lessons with her.
I was extremely happy with the tutoring Ms Nils provided to my daughters. Had we stayed in Dubai we would have continued our weekly lessons with her.
Mother of A Level Student:
Firstly I would like to inform you that my son achieved an A in his Maths exams as a result of the tuition with Nils. Nils did a fantastic job revising with my son, she prepared a lot of useful information besides providing previous exams, summary sheets, etc. My son enjoyed the tuition with Nils and she managed to keep the lessons always interesting whilst preparing him extremely well for the actual exam.
We are extremely pleased with the service you provided and will definitely recommend you to friends and family.
I just got my results, and I wanted to thank you because I got an A in maths! I just want to reiterate my thanks to you, because without you I could never have done it. Thanks so much for helping me! I got B's all around, Maths was my best subject and probably the reason I got accepted into Sheffield, which is awesome!
Mother of IB Student:
Nils in a very short time, you have made an amazing difference to us and we are so pleased!
Nick's grade was posted yesterday and he scored a 87.2%. He is so pleased with his incredible improvement and is smiling about Maths for a change.
You are an absolute God send, and I'm so grateful to you for building Nick's confidence and ability in Maths. We are so incredibly lucky to have you! Thank you so very much! So happy you had a space for Nick!
Mother of Year 4 and Year 6 student:
When I first approached Nils to be my children's maths tutor, I couldn't possibly have envisaged the constructive impact she would have on their progress in maths. A natural teacher, her engaging personality and positive approach is infectious. This, coupled with her love of maths, has facilitated my children to gain confidence in a subject they were previously apprehensive of. My children adore Nils, and with her positive, encouraging, teaching style, tailored to each child, I feel sure they are already feeling the same way about the very subject they once despaired of.
Mother of Year 4 and Year 5 Students:
Nils is fantastic! My eldest daughter started with her last year towards the end of the academic year and thanks to Nils she moved from the Average Group to the Advanced Maths Group and is now achieving high grades.
I recommend on-line tutoring. At first when Nils recommended it I was not sure it would be effective. However I can see the big improvement in my Year 4 daughter. And my Year 8 daughter now always achieves high grades.
Nils makes math fun and interesting for children therefore my daughters now enjoy Maths.
She is simply the best and online tutoring is great!
Mother of IB Student:
I would highly recommend Nils as a tutor for your child. She really connects and makes what can be a stressful subject a very logical and enjoyable one. My daughter was really struggling with maths in school and within a few weeks of working with Nils, I could see her confidence growing daily. Nils also helped her form a study methodology and systematic approach to mastering the subject and achieving the results in examinations.
Thank you so much for getting me to the level that I am at. Who would have thought that from the beginning I would have got from a 3 to a 5. I would not have been able to get this level without you and appreciate all the effort you put into helping me.
