I have extensive experience teaching 11+, GCSEs and A Levels. I specialise in creating revision materials, preparing for exams, and reassuring student anxiety, particularly students who need extra pastoral care. As a writer I also focus on creative writing and helping unconfident readers unlock a text, and my previous students have won writing competitions!
At university I tutored other students in essay technique for coursework and dissertations at both undergraduate and Masters levels. I previously worked as a drama teacher coaching GCSE Shakespeare texts, story comprehension for the 11+ or public speaking skills for primary and secondary-aged students. I also volunteer for Girl Guiding UK as a Brownie Leader, running activities to build confidence and develop leadership skills.
After taking my A-Levels in English Literature, History, and Classical Civilisation I studied at St Hilda's College Oxford. Here I gained a 2:1 in English Language and Literature, earning the Neilsen Scholarship for outstanding results in my first year exams. I was Secretary of the University Drama Society and tutored other students in dissertation technique and for the Old English and Medieval papers.
I now work as a full-time writer and tutor, and specialise in writing for young audiences, including writing the official stage adaptations of Philip Pullman's The Ruby in the Smoke and Lauren Child's Ruby Redfort.
I believe a tutor's role is both academic and pastoral: they unlock the subject for the student and restore their learning confidence. My approach is focused on patience, active listening, and tailoring my teaching style to the student's strengths and interests, making studying relaxed and fun! My goal is to make the student feel confident, secure and able to walk into the exam room knowing they'll do a wonderful job.
What I do when I am not tutoring
I write plays for older children and teenagers, and recently wrote a new sci-fi show called 'Girl Scouts vs Aliens' for the Edinburgh Fringe! I'm now writing an adaptation of the book 'Masha and the Firebird' for KS2 audiences, and working on my first novel for older children. I am a passionate reader and love discussing students' favourite books, and can recommend stories for any interest and age group.
I've been part of Girl Guiding UK for fifteen years, including working in America on a camp exchange programme, and currently lead a Brownie troop of twenty girls in North London. I teach a range of practical activities and take them on trips around England, and we're currently planning a Bake Off-themed camp! I also volunteer for the Girlguiding Champions, supporting girl-led political campaigns around the UK.
