I started tutoring at university, helping other students develop their essay technique for exams and coursework. I subsequently began working with children aged 7-11 as a Brownie Leader and Drama Teacher, teaching activities and subjects from Astronomy to character analysis in Roald Dahl. In my work adapting children's books I've helped unconfident readers develop their reading skills and tackle creative writing in a range of forms. I cover a range of subjects including the 11+, Year 6 SATS, GCSE and A-Level English, GCSE and A-Level History, and GCSE Drama and Classical Civilisation, whilst supporting students from Year 4 to Masters with revision and essay techniques.
After taking my A-Levels in English Literature, History, and Classical Civilisation I studied at St Hilda's College Oxford. Here I gained a 2:1 in English Language and Literature, earning the Neilsen Scholarship for outstanding results in my first year exams. Since graduating I adapted Philip Pullman's 'The Ruby in the Smoke' and Lauren Child's 'Ruby Redfort' for the stage, and now write and tutor full-time.
I believe a tutor's role is both academic and pastoral: they unlock the subject for the student and restore their learning confidence. My approach is focused on patience, active listening, and tailoring my teaching style to the student's strengths and interests, bringing the subject to life with games and fun! I have experience supporting a wide range of learning styles, and have extensive pastoral care experience, including with SEN learners.
What I do when I am not tutoring
I'm writing a new play for children based on the book 'Masha and the Firebird', and a family radio serial about space. I also lead a Brownie troupe on Monday evenings and teach drama for ages 8-15.
