Sophie

Sophie is an experienced primary level tutor, with a specific specialism in SEN support. She has worked in both the independent and state sectors - in KS1 and KS2 level. Alongside her tutoring, Sophie is now studying with the British Dyslexia Association to complete the Accredited Level 5 Certificate in Dyslexia; Literacy, Support and Intervention.

I began my tutoring career in London alongside my classroom teaching, providing 1:1 after-school tuition in primary English and Maths. After starting a family, I continued tutoring children in my local village, supporting individual learning needs while helping to build confidence, independence and enjoyment in learning.

More recently, my tutoring has developed a stronger focus on English, literacy and dyslexia support. I am currently completing the British Dyslexia Association Accredited Level 5 Certificate in Dyslexia: Literacy, Support and Intervention. As part of my specialist training, I deliver weekly 1:1 literacy interventions that are carefully structured, cumulative and tailored to each child’s individual strengths and areas of need.

I have also recently completed the British Dyslexia Association course Breaking Barriers in Reading Comprehension: For Access to Understanding, which has strengthened my understanding of how to support reading comprehension through explicit teaching, vocabulary development, oral language and appropriate reading strategies.

My aim is to help each child make clear progress towards their individual goals while developing greater confidence, independence and enjoyment in their learning.

Biography

I was born and raised in Hampshire and attended Twyford School before continuing my education at St Edward’s School, Oxford. I later completed a BA (Hons) in Education Studies.

My interest in supporting children with a wide range of learning needs led me to complete a Postgraduate Certificate in Special and Inclusive Education at Roehampton University in 2012. I then worked as a Teaching Assistant before qualifying as a teacher through Wandsworth SCITT in 2015.

Since qualifying, I have taught in both the independent and state sectors, including at Eaton House, Eaton Square School and Farleigh School. More recently, I have worked across Key Stage 1 and Lower Key Stage 2, developing a strong understanding of how personalised support can build both academic skills and confidence.

I am currently studying with the British Dyslexia Association towards the Accredited Level 5 Certificate in Dyslexia: Literacy, Support and Intervention, which I am due to complete in December 2026. From May 2027, I plan to continue my specialist training through the Accredited Level 7 Diploma in Dyslexia Assessment and Intervention.

Approach to Tutoring

My approach to tutoring is centred on building confidence, independence and enjoyment of learning. I take time to understand each child’s individual strengths and needs, adapting sessions to suit the way they learn best.

I use structured, cumulative and multisensory teaching, with regular review and repetition to help secure learning. I also encourage children to reflect on the strategies that help them, so they can become increasingly confident and independent learners.

Above all, I aim to create a calm, positive and supportive environment where children feel comfortable making mistakes, asking questions and recognising their own progress.

When not tutoring

I am currently studying with the British Dyslexia Association to complete the Accredited Level 5 Certificate in Dyslexia; Literacy, Support and Intervention.

When I am not studying or teaching, I spend much of my time with my two children and enjoy getting outdoors for long walks with our dog.

Looking ahead, I plan to begin the Level 7 Diploma in Dyslexia Assessment and Intervention in May 2027, with the goal of becoming a qualified dyslexia assessor and further developing my expertise in supporting learners with specific learning difficulties.
