I have over 1000 hours of experience tutoring students of a variety of different ages and in a wide range of subjects. I have taught English and Maths at 7+, 11+ and 13+ as well as GCSE, and English at AS/A- Level, IB, and English as a Foreign Language. I have also tutored GCSE History, Drama and Music at GCSE and AS/A-Level, Psychology to A-Level, Sociology to A-Level and BA and Master’s. I have also taken a couple of students through Oxbridge preparation. Alongside this, I taught English in a Tibetan Buddhist monastery whilst travelling in Nepal. Throughout 2013 and again in 2015, I worked as an online essay marker and created learning resources for the tutoring agency Peak Courses, which tutored students from Hong Kong in English. Whilst at the University of Cambridge, I presented a seminar on the Anthropology of Bhutan to a class of 8 3rd year undergraduates and whilst studying for my PhD at Oxford, I presented a seminar entitled 'Sound Art and the Failure of the Avant-Garde' at the University of Oxford and again at Manchester Metropolitan University. I have also worked as a teaching assistant at the Oak Lodge school for special needs.
I am a full-time, Professional Tutor, living in London. I completed a BA in Archaeology and Anthropology at the University of Cambridge, specialising in Social Anthropology, before completing a Master’s in Ethnomusicology at SOAS. Following my Master’s I worked as research assistant for the SESHAT historical database project, before commencing studies for a PhD in Ethnomusicology at the University of Oxford, where I wrote academic papers on digital operas and completed fieldwork in Los Angeles. Finding that I enjoyed teaching even more than research, I left Oxford in 2018 to become a tutor and performer in London. Since then I have worked as a full-time tutor, both privately and through several agencies. I am an excellent communicator, and excel at motivating and inspiring my tutees, whatever their needs. I have always had very broad ranging interests and love tutoring students of all ages in a variety of subjects. When not tutoring, I am an improv and stand up comedian and portrait painter and hope to devise ways of using performing and improv skills to help people with special needs and autism in particular.
I have always had very broad ranging interests and love tutoring students of all ages in a variety of subjects. Having taught so many different kinds of people I have learned how unique each student is, and I place a lot of importance on catering to individual learning styles. I am an excellent communicator and consider myself to be empathetic and encouraging. Where I excel is in motivating and inspiring my tutees with my infectious love of learning.
When I'm not tutoring, I perform improv theatre and stand up comedy. I am also learning Indian classical singing and enjoy portrait painting.
Lottie is an open-minded and an impressive teacher. In her lessons, there is never a dull moment. She taught me step by step and gave me some personal suggestions about my courses, making me feel much more confident. In particular, she focused on my individual needs to help me reach my goal. In times when I was exhausted and anxious about my 16+ applications, I still remembered that she comforted me and said, “If this doesn't work out, I believe the best still lies ahead.” – 16+ applicant from China
AQA A-Level Psychology: ''Lottie was a brilliant tutor for our son. He was predicted a D despite being a bright boy, as he had problems with focus and consistency. He needed a B to get into the University of Manchester, and with Lottie’s support and motivation ended up achieving an A. We were thrilled with the result, thanks Lottie!'' (Mother of A-Level student)
AQA A-Level English: We originally asked Lottie to help my daughter with her English A-Level coursework, but they got on so well that she also ended up helping her prepare for her interview to study Geography at Cambridge, after which she was offered a place. She was also awarded full marks for her English coursework! Lottie was always a delight to speak to and we’re very grateful for all the help she gave to our daughter.'' (Mother of A-Level student attending LASWAP)
Reading: ''Lottie is an amazing tutor! My 6 year old daughter wasn’t very keen on reading but Lottie made the lessons so fun and interesting that after just a few weeks, she was moved up by three levels. Her school teacher was amazed at how quickly she had made progress. I cannot recommend Lottie highly enough!'' (Mother of KS1 student, age 6 attending Brooklands Junior School)
Pearson GCSE in English and Maths (for tourism qualification):''My son has learning difficulties and struggles with comprehension and logic. Lottie helped him with his maths by using Dragonbox [a computer programme developed by mathematicians to help children with their understanding of basic arithmetic] and made lots of breakthroughs with him. He’s made massive improvements in his reading as well, as Lottie is very good at breaking things down for him in a calm way that makes him feel comfortable.'' (Father of SEN student age 23 attending Barnet College)
