-International Baccalaureate (IB) Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL). I have several years of experience teaching and guiding students through the internal assessment (IA) process required for the Mathematics IB course
I have over 8 years of teaching Mathematics at the above levels to students of all abilities and from a diverse range of backgrounds. Over the past few years, I have successfully run various revision courses in the lead up to exams. These can range from 1-2 years and have covered GCSE/A LEVEL/IB exam content. This experience has further developed my skills to be able to identify the topics students struggle with most and come up with effective teaching solutions that increase their confidence and mathematical ability. It also gives students a chance to develop their exam technique and problem-solving skills. Building strong, long-term connections with a student and parents is vital for me and I have seen the amazing impact that a positive student-teacher relationship can have on a student.
I was born in Birmingham and attended Nishkam High School studying Chemistry, Mathematics, Further Mathematics and Physics at A level. At university I studied Mathematics at the University of Birmingham and started tutoring privately alongside. My dissertation explored the effectiveness of different feedback methods within secondary Mathematics education. Ever since my time at university I have enjoyed the challenge of helping people understand Mathematics at all levels. After university I decided to take a gap year where I travelled around India and worked as a volunteer for an educational charity. Upon my return I went on to train with the King Edward’s Consortium as a secondary Mathematics teacher. This led me to teach at King Edward’s Aston and King Edward’s Birmingham over the next 5 years, both are which top grammar/independent schools within the West Midlands. I’ve continued to tutor students to achieve their highest potential within Mathematics and I’m now excited to be increasing my capacity as a private tutor.
My teaching based on creating a welcoming environment for students where they feel safe and confident enough to push themselves, ask questions and to overcome the fear of making mistakes. I have many years of experience tutoring 1-1, small groups and regular classes with up to 30 students at school. I enjoy the challenge of understanding how each student learns and creating solutions that are personalised and aim to break down problems into smaller, more manageable chunks. Seeing students develop in ability and confidence as they learn with me has been really fulfilling and I’m looking forward to many more journeys to come. I find research into teaching methods fascinating and is something I like to keep up to date with. Students find my style of teaching clear, challenging, interesting, and engaging.
I am currently a full-time teacher of Mathematics at King Edward's School Birmingham. I am also an officer in the RAF CCF section at school. Outside of teaching and tutoring I enjoy spending time with family and friends, playing a range of sports (mainly football), reading about Philosophy and History and travelling.
''As a parent I was a bit apprehensive of going with a private tutor but I have seen a huge improvement in the confidence and mathematical ability of my son. I would often sit in on their lessons and Mandeep would make it both engaging and enjoyable for my son. He would be able to explain difficult concepts in a simple manner which the school teachers struggled to do for my son.'' (Parent of GCSE student, June 2018)
''In terms of the level of maths being taught the standard is high. The goal was always to obtain and thrive for the highest possible grades. The average lesson usually started with us reviewing questions I had completed from home. I would bring the question that I struggled with and then would receive support in achieving the answers. Additionally I could bring up any topic I wanted and felt I needed help with, we would start by describing the basic principles and then working up the ranks of difficulty in terms of questions. As a tutor I was confident within your ability as a tutor. You were knowledgeable and never told me that’s you couldn’t answer the questions. I had full faith in your teaching. Communication was superb outside of lessons. I could send questions whenever so that you could prepare the solutions. Replies were fast and questions always answered. What I most enjoyed was the learning environment, the lessons didn’t feel strict or monotonous. Especially if I don’t understand something there was no pressure to get it right the first time as I knew support in finding the answer was always available.'' (GCSE student, June 2019)
''My year 9 daughter took lessons from Mandeep last year in preparation for Further Mathematics starting in year 10. She found Mandeep created a very comfortable environment which allowed her to be confident in asking questions and really stretching herself. He was very patient and insisted on students asking as many questions as possible.'' (Parent of a student preparing for the AQA Additional Mathematics exam, June 2020)
''Mandeep had given me GCSE maths tutoring on all topics and specific topics I was weak in. I felt very confident after the lessons as I knew the lessons had been benefiting me as Mandeep gave me work to do and we then pointed out the areas where I was going wrong and he helped me to overcome these errors. He was very helpful even outside of lessons I was able to contact him via WhatsApp if I was unsure of any question and he helped me make sure I understood and have examples with it. I enjoyed attending the lessons as I knew at the end, I had learnt something each week whether it be a new topic I was unsure of or the method on how to do it. He was great, highly recommended!'' (GCSE Mathematics student, June 2020)
''Mandeep was an amazing teacher! He was so patient with me, I used to hate maths class at school and always scraped by in mock tests and homework. But honestly Mandeep has turned a subject which caused me anxiety to something I cannot wait to study. He's helped me get a predicted level 9 at GCSE and just waiting on my GCSE results for this year. Thank you so much Sir, I can’t recommend him enough.'' (Year 10/11 student, June 2020)
''Mandeep tutored my son after a disappointing grade in his end of year mocks in year 12. Mandeep was great, he did an initial assessment based off based paper questions. From this he was able to identify points of weakness which improved my son's exam technique and overall confidence and understanding. Communication with the tutor was brilliant, he was always on hand to answer any questions which was really reassuring. My son looked forward to lessons and always felt like he had made solid progress after each lesson with Mandeep. The lessons were done online and Mandeep was able to annotate his screen and do live solutions/examples which was perfect for my sons method of learning. Thank you, Mandeep.''
