“We’re very pleased with his support and highly recommend him.”

I have taught Physics and Mathematics for more than twenty years across GCSE, IGCSE, A-level, International A-level and IB. My experience covers the principal UK and international specifications, and I have worked with students ranging from those needing to strengthen the fundamentals to those aiming for the highest grades.

I have extensive examining experience across the major awarding bodies and have held senior examining roles for more than a decade. I currently work as a Principal Examiner for A-level Physics, giving me a secure, detailed understanding of assessment standards, mark schemes and the ways in which students most commonly gain or lose marks.

Alongside classroom teaching, I have tutored extensively, led revision courses and supported students preparing for Oxford and Cambridge admissions tests and interviews, including the ESAT and PAT. I have also worked with students preparing for the Physics Olympiad and other demanding university applications.

I have contributed to the PAT advisory panel and delivered masterclasses for students preparing for competitive university entry.

I am a highly experienced Physics teacher and senior examiner, currently working as a Principal Examiner for A-level Physics. I have more than twenty years’ experience teaching Physics and Mathematics at GCSE and A level and have held senior examining roles for over a decade.

I spent many years as Head of Physics and subsequently Director of Assessment at one of the UK’s leading HMC schools. I studied Physics with Study in Continental Europe at the University of Birmingham, graduating in 2001, before completing my teacher training and Postgraduate Diploma in Education at Durham University.

Throughout my career, I have supported students aiming for the highest grades and preparing for competitive university entry, including Oxford and Cambridge admissions tests and interviews, the ESAT, PAT and Physics Olympiad.

“The lessons were interactive, flexible and insightful, often going beyond the syllabus to give context and depth. As exams approached, his focus on exam papers and technique helped boost my grade. I’m now going to Oxford to study Earth Sciences!”

“Tom is an excellent tutor. After getting a C in my Year 12 mocks, I needed an A in Physics – and I got it, thanks to his carefully tailored tutoring.”

“We made a last-minute decision to find a tutor to help our daughter iron out any gaps in her A-level Physics knowledge and ensure she was approaching exam questions in the right way. Tom was an excellent choice: clear, calm and highly effective in his teaching. He helped her refine her understanding and sharpen her exam technique without adding any pressure.”

My tutoring is calm, structured and closely tailored to the individual student. I identify gaps in understanding, explain difficult ideas clearly and use carefully chosen questions to help students apply what they have learned.

My secure, detailed knowledge of examinations allows me to give precise guidance on what examiners are looking for, where marks are commonly lost and how students can improve the accuracy and quality of their responses. Subject knowledge and examination technique are developed together throughout each lesson.

Students receive clear, consistent feedback, carefully selected work between sessions and ongoing support where needed. I aim to provide the right balance of support and challenge, helping students become more confident, accurate and independent.

Outside tutoring, I am a busy parent of two and enjoy travelling, reading—particularly science fiction—and spending time with my family. I am closely involved with my local running club, where I serve as President, and I enjoy running and following a range of sports. I am also a lifelong Sunderland AFC supporter.
