I read Architecture at the University of Bath, attaining a high first class honours & winning the course award for Thesis Excellence, along with receiving the second highest score ever to be awarded of 82. During my degree, I completed an Erasmus Diploma at the Technical University of Munich and a Leonardo da Vinci Diploma in Berlin. At the same time as my Bachelor, I learned German to a professional proficiency. I have experience working in a variety of vocations in countries including Switzerland, Germany, Belgium, Turkey and the UK. Prior to Architecture, I received a distinction in Foundation Fine Art, along with As and A*s throughout A-Level and GCSE.
After completing my degree in 2011, I gained vocational experience collaborating with the globally renown architects, Herzog & de Meuron in Basel after being offered the position prior to completing my degree. Switzerland. I predominantly worked on the Stirling Prize nominated Blavatnik School of Government for the University of Oxford. At this extremely thorough Architecture Practise, Maths & English, for logic-based resolution of technical issues & clarity of communication, were always a necessity.
In 2013, I moved back to the UK to pursue my passions that lie within art, long form writing and education.
I believe one-to-one tutoring to be an incredibly important aspect of education. Tutoring offers a great environment in which to learn & for confidence to grow, allowing the student to quickly gain a strong development in the specific subject area. For each student, I design the tutorials to best develop their specific learning and concentration ability, with a view towards gaining context and understanding of the subject in preparation for exams. I am an understanding, empathetic and fun tutor who is patient and able to vary the ways in which to learn, from quick memory games to thoroughly breaking down certain subjects into their component parts.
What I do when I am not tutoring
Of course, tutoring is given full priority over my other activities. Though, when not at work, I focus my attention towards writing & fine art. I am currently writing a set of short stories with a view to publication. I intend to take an MA in Fine Art in the 2016/17 academic year to develop my practise in both art & writing.
I volunteer regularly at a community garden & a food bank, something that I find thoroughly rewarding. I enjoy being busy & in particular being productive; whether that entails swimming in London Fields Lido to improvisational comedy workshops to spending time with friends.
"Thomas was really brilliant with my son and had the perfect personality for him - calm, reserved and positive." Mother of previous student.
''Although an able student, my daughter lacked confidence in some areas of the curriculum and also wanted to improve the consistency of her performance. Thomas’ approach was calm and supportive and tailored to her individual concerns and ability. He was approachable and empathetic as well as skilled in explaining relevant concepts. As well as covering key areas of the curriculum, Thomas also provided useful advice about exam technique, which my daughter also found valuable. Working with Thomas on a weekly basis, her confidence and technique improved and I am delighted to report that she achieved the A* grade that she was aiming for.
I have no hesitation in recommending Thomas.'' (Parent of year 11 student who attained an A* in iGCSE Maths)
''Thomas has been an excellent tutor. He can explain complicated ideas in a manner which makes them easy to comprehend. He is attentive, can spot any particular problems that I encounter within the work and is patient throughout my tuition.'' (Mature Student, Open University First Year Engineering attaining 95% average)
''We are very grateful for all the work you have done throughout your tutorials with our son. He genuinely looked forward to your tutorials and has noticeably grown in confidence under your care.'' (Parent of year 6 student preparing for High School in both English & Maths)
''All your hard work, support and care during the school year have been much appreciated by the whole family. Both the twins enjoyed your tutoring sessions and have improved hugely, particularly in English. My daughter gained a lot of confidence in her comprehension and started to get marks in the region of 90%.'' (Parent of twins, boy & girl, in year 5; both preparing for pre-tests and Common Entrance in all subjects)
''Thomas helped my daughter to achieve an A* by being clear and patient and by understanding what help she actually needed. She found his explanations and advice very useful and reported that he was encouraging and easy to communicate with. '' (Parent of year 11 student who moved from a B to an A* in iGCSE Maths)
“We could not be more grateful to Thomas for the tuition he provided our daughter. She was sceptical of tutors and of her own ability to pass the subjects she had recently failed. Thomas patiently built up her confidence and encouraged her to learn and give the extra effort required to get her the vital passes in English and Maths GCSEs that she needed.” (Parent of GCSE student who moved from a lower grade to a C in both English and Maths)
‘I have lacked confidence to overcome my fear of Maths since leaving school; having one to one tutorials with Tom has been extremely helpful and I believe I would not have passed my Level 1 Functional Skills course last year without his help and guidance. His calming and supportive approach has been crucial towards my progression and I now feel much more confident in achieving what I’ve always dreaded – an A grade in GCSE Maths!’ (Mature Student)
