As well as teaching successfully in schools I have a wide and senior experience of History examining. I have tutored students successfully at GCSE, IGCSE, AS and A2 level for main examination boards (AQA, CIE, and OCR as well as IB History. During my teaching career I have worked with very academic students as well as those with learning difficulties.
After graduating and completing a PGCE I began a teaching career in London and over a period of twenty-five years I taught in three schools. During that time I worked as an examiner for GCSE, IGCSE, IB and A2 History. I then left teaching to take up a senior History examining role which I now combine with delivering training for teachers, leading school tours to Germany and Poland and private History tuition up to IB and A level. I have written several History GCSE and A level textbooks.
I aim to quickly build a supportive and reassuring relationship between tutor and student. I use a variety of teaching methods to reflect various learning styles. I like to set challenging, thought-provoking tasks and always aim to make the student as confident as possible in their studies. I always ensure they have an explicit and thorough understanding of how their work will be assessed in examinations.
What I do when I am not tutoring
I would at some point like to study History at postgraduate level. I enjoy travelling -especially to the USA and central Europe. I also study German and began a B.A. German degree at Birkbeck College which I hope to resume shortly. I have recently become interested in photography and am looking at ways to develop my knowledge and skills in the subject.
I just wanted to let you know that Nigel is great and really helpful. I felt much more confident after just one session, so thank you for the recommendation. A Level student
'Nigel has been absolutely superb. He is helpful, supportive, balances criticism just right, is always available, goes the extra mile to help and much more.' A level History student.
