I have over 6 years’ experience as a private tutor, teaching both face-to-face as well as online. I have tutored students of all ages and levels in Maths, English, French and Mandarin.
My past students hail from all corners of the globe, including the UK, China, France, Italy, Russia and the USA.
Tutoring aside, I offer advice and mentorship to Oxbridge applicants. I help students prepare for Oxbridge admissions exams (notably the MLAT and the MMLAA) and conduct mock interviews.
I was born and brought up in London, where I attended both a British and a Chinese school, so I am completely bilingual in Mandarin and English.
I attended Clapton Girls' Academy, where I took A-Levels in French, English Literature, Economics, and Maths. I later became the first student in my school to be admitted to the University of Oxford, where I pursued my passion for languages and literature. I studied for a BA in French & Italian, specialising in post-French Revolution literature, and Italian Renaissance literature.
Throughout my A-Levels and my degree, I tutored in English, Maths, French and Mandarin. Teaching has always brought me immense joy, and I find it to be an incredibly rewarding use of my time. Thus, after graduating, I took up a position as a Professional Tutor with Keystone.
I believe in learning that is both long-lasting and flexible. To this end, I strive to guide students in reaching solutions independently, rather than spoon-feeding them ideas and answers. I also encourage students to keep making links between new ideas learnt and things that they already know.
I appreciate that no two students are the same - I therefore always tailor my lessons to the unique learning style of the student. I find that doing so results in learning that is more effective (and more enjoyable!).
Lastly, as a tutor, and as a person, I pride myself on my friendliness, which I believe to be just as important a trait as any. My friendliness means that students always feel completely at ease, which in turn develops a classroom environment that is most conducive to learning.
What I do when I am not tutoring
Outside of tutoring, I love playing football. I have been kicking a ball since I was a toddler, and the highlight of my footballing career was playing midfield for the Oxford Women’s Football Club. When not running around on the pitch, I love running outdoors - the nicer the scenery, the better. I ran my first half-marathon in 2017, and have had the half-marathon itch ever since!
''Le-My has been working with my Y8 son every week for nearly a year now, and we are so happy that we found her - we could not have met anyone more perfect to work with him. He’s at a school where lessons are fast-paced and with high expectations, so we were looking for someone to ensure that he keeps on top of all the vocab and grammar. Le-My goes over everything that he is learning each week at school, meaning that he is really confident in class and doing well. We initially thought this would just improve his spoken French but actually Le-My also tests him on spelling which is really fantastic for his written work too. Le-My is not only brilliantly efficient, calm, organised and precise but also friendly, kind, enthusiastic and cheerful, which my son appreciates - he always looks forward to his lessons with her. From my point of view, I trust totally that between them they are covering everything thoroughly, and so French is one subject where I don’t have to ask him if he’s up to date with homework and revision for tests!'' (Mother of a Year 8 French student)
''Le-My is an amazing language tutor. She taught my teenage son through his French GCSE. She boosted his grade by at least 2 levels. She gave him confidence and enthusiasm for the subject. She is totally professional and positive in her attitude. 100% recommend any student is lucky to have her!'' (Mother of GCSE French student)
