I have been drawn to teaching and mentoring roles throughout my adult life, across a wide range of ages, settings, and subjects. While still an A Level student, I led a weekly Minimus Latin club at my former primary school for Year 5 pupils who would not otherwise have had access to learning Latin. Over the course of the academic year, I designed and delivered lesson plans each week, building students’ vocabulary, grammar, and understanding of Roman mythology from scratch. Alongside this, I mentored GCSE students from a local secondary school in English Language and Literature over two months, devising structured lesson plans, advising on exam technique and marking scheme criteria, and providing targeted feedback on written work, with the goal of helping them to achieve at least a C grade.

I have also had experience reviewing personal statements for students applying to Oxbridge and other Russell Group universities while I was a student at Oxford. I was also invited annually by my school to speak to prospective Oxbridge applicants about the full application process, from personal statements and admissions tests to interview preparation.

After Oxford, I taught English to secondary school students aged 10–18 across two schools in Vienna through the British Council. I planned and delivered my own lessons independently, tailoring topics to different age groups on a variety of topics. For the more able students, this included contemporary cultural topics including global geopolitics and the 2016 presidential election, climate change, as well as understanding Shakespeare’s language and metre for non-native speakers. I also provided targeted speaking practice across age ranges of 10-18, both one-to-one and in small groups.

I am an Oxford-educated professional with a decade of experience in leadership, teaching, mentoring, and learning across three countries. My parents emigrated to the UK from Hong Kong at an early age, and were the first in their families to attend university. They instilled within me from an early age a deep appreciation of the importance of education.

I attended The Lady Eleanor Holles School in London, where I achieved eleven A*s at GCSE and A*A*AA at A Level in Classical Greek, Latin, English Literature, and German.

I then read Classics and English at Oriel College, Oxford, graduating with upper second class honours.

After Oxford, I spent a semester in Vienna teaching English to secondary-aged pupils. Thereafter, I joined the Civil Service Fast Stream, the UK government’s flagship graduate leadership programme, where I spent seven years working on some of the most complex policy challenges of our time, represented the UK at international conferences, and led high-performing teams.

More recently, I took a career break (sabbatical) in May 2024 and left London in June 2024 to spend two years at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York studying acting, for my artistic and personal development. This time away from London helped me to re-focus on what I really wanted out of my career and led me to decide to pursue tutoring as my profession. I am now back in London and committed to bringing this full range of experience to my work with my students.

My academic background in Classics and English, combined with seven years in the civil service and two years of intensive acting training in New York, has given me an uniquely broad set of tools to draw on in a tutoring environment. I am patient, perceptive, and deeply committed to getting the best out of every student I work with.

From my civil service career, I learned that the aspect of my work that I found most rewarding was the one-to-one development of my staff. I successfully supported three of my staff members to secure promotions through consistently giving them challenging tasks to build their capability, providing feedback on their written applications, and coaching them through mock interview questions. Watching someone grow in confidence and capability through sustained, targeted support is what I enjoy most of all.

As a tutor, I am committed to getting to know each student individually so I can tailor their learning experience to their strengths, and further build on their areas for growth and development. This includes, but is not limited to, their learning style, their relationship with the subject, and what they are hoping to achieve. My approach is structured but responsive, and I adapt my methods to what works for each person rather than applying a fixed template.

In addition to my passion for education, I am a working writer and actor. I am currently writing my first full-length play while balancing auditions (mostly recorded remotely) and rehearsals. When I’m not tutoring, acting, or writing, I enjoy going to the opera and ballet, and spending time with my family.
