David
David is a highly experienced Maths and Physics tutor who has been supporting students since 2004. He has helped numerous tutees extend their knowledge beyond the curriculum and often helps students preparing for Olympiad competitions.
“David is an excellent teacher, and puts a lot of effort into every lesson, making sure every second is used to its fullest extent. He has helped me excel in both the BMO and the STEP, while making sure I truly understand the maths every step of the way.”

I have been tutoring one-to-one since 2004. I started by helping students who were finding GCSE and A-Level material challenging then in 2008 I became a tutor at an independent boarding school which also involved 13+ common entrance. In 2012 I started tutoring for Oxbridge entry and have helped hundreds of students prepare their applications for Maths, Physics and Engineering. In 2017 I offered tuition for Maths enrichment via Maths challenges and Olympiads which has been popular ever since. I have always taken to these different types of tuition naturally and expect to make a significant difference to the educational trajectory of my students.
I completed my degree at The University of Oxford in 2002, graduating with a first-class degree in Physics. I then studied at the Royal Northern College of Music for two years and embarked on a career as a professional musician playing for all major orchestras in the North of England and reaching the shortlist stage for full-time employment in the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and Hallé Orchestras. I tutored in Maths privately since 2004 including Oxbridge preparation (Physics and Engineering) since 2012 and Maths enrichment since 2017. During and after the pandemic I experienced a lot more demand for online tuition and now I play in many fewer concerts in favour of online tuition.
“David has been very helpful in the UKMT challenges in general as he explains through the questions and introduces new problem solving techniques. He was able to help my son to get through the SMC and into the Olympiad which David had also been teaching how to tackle. He guided us through his structured approach to preparation for these competitions referring us to the right books and material.”
“I could not recommend David more. I found David two years ago and asked him to help with my son's JMC. My son loves his lessons so much and learns a lot from him. Only one year's learning my son achieved a gold medal in JMC! But before he followed David's learning, he can only get a bronze medal. Incredible achievement! Now my son starts his IMC learning and we are confident that he will get another gold medal. Besides his achievements in competition tests, my son forms great mathematical thinking in his school studying and he feels the math learning in his school is a piece of cake. Now he is in his school math studying set one and enjoys his math learning.”
“David provides an overall professional service, encompassing first class education support, time keeping, consistency, very open honest fee build up and adequate parent reporting. This overall professionalism has resulted in my wife becoming relaxed, a son that has become reasonably self sufficient and improving in confidence and as a result achieving Silver in the UK Junior Mathematical Challenge. What more could you ask?”
“David is an extremely knowledgeable mathematics teacher with a great command of BMO style questions and teaches really well in a clear, concise and efficient manner. I really enjoyed learning from David and would recommend him to anyone who wants to understand the greater intricacies and complexities of maths.”
I have extensive experience in helping students who are seeking additional challenges beyond their mainstream education. I have found that this requires an approach which builds on the work the student has already done, rather than dismiss their work and lecture them with my own way of operating. The advantages of this strategy is that is preserves the student's own ideas and makes the tutorial productive and efficient. I have achieved great success with a large number of students over several years by employing this method. Having studied at Oxford, tuition for Oxbridge entry comes naturally to me and I have enjoyed giving excellent service to my students over many years. I am enthusiastic about problem solving in maths and find it rewarding to help students reach their potential in maths olympiads.
I have two children (born in 2013 and 2017) and most of my free time is devoted to them and their interests. My son and I are season ticket holders at Blackburn Rovers and I enjoy supporting my daughter when she attends Morris Dancing competitions. I recently made a trebuchet with my son which can launch a football with a range of 60ft. I volunteer at my daughter's school, helping the most able mathematicians develop their skills. I enjoy listening to Radio 4 and, while studying at the Royal Northern College of Music, was captain of their University Challenge team.
