For younger students, I am available for school admissions support. I have ten years of experience helping children with the 7+, 11+ and 13+ entrance exams, as well 16+ experience such as the 16+ Westminster School entrance exam for Economics. I have tutored students studying at schools across the world, with many of my students relocating from East Asia and the Middle East. I have helped students secure places at over 30 schools across the UK, including St Paul’s Girls’ School, Brighton College, Roedean School, Wycombe Abbey School and Cheltenham Ladies’ College. I have also coordinated students’ home-schooling.
I tutor Economics, Politics and Business A Level and have greatly enjoyed sharing my insights from my work experience with them. I specialise in university admissions for the Social Sciences at Oxbridge, Ivy League, Russel Group and Grandes Écoles. I assist with personal statement writing; CV development; interview preparation; university selection, and exam revision. Some of the courses I have helped my students secure places on include PPE at the University of Oxford, B.Sc. Politics and Economics at the LSE, M.S. Sustainability Management at Colombia University, B.A. Political Science at UC Berkeley, and M.Sc. Public Policy at Sciences Po Paris. I continue to support students throughout their undergraduate studies with tuition for specific modules and dissertation advice.
For adults, I have taught clients ESL and FLE (français langue étrangère). I specialise in Business English and French, but can also provide conversation classes. I have taught ambassadors, CEOs, entrepreneurs and diplomats from around the world. In my spare time, I have volunteered for seven years as an English, Spanish and French language instructor (in the UK, California and France) for refugees.
I am a highly experienced bilingual tutor with 3,600 hours billed and a decade of experience. I have an MPhil from the University of Cambridge (awarded full scholarship), as well as degrees from UC Berkeley, Sciences Po Paris and the University of Warwick, and a certificate from Harvard Business School. For my undergraduate degree, I was awarded the prize for the highest-performing student in the department.
Prior to Cambridge, I worked as an official at the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) in Paris and as a civil servant in the UK. To become an official at the OECD, I had to pass multiple tests and interviews, including logical reasoning tests, written tests and questions on issues relevant to international economics and politics. Ultimately, I was chosen as one of the top six successful applicants of the 2,600 candidates who applied for my post. During this time, I had the opportunity to meet numerous heads of state, ambassadors, city mayors and CEOs of FTSE 100 companies as part of the programme. I have thus seen politics and economics play out in real-time and enjoy sharing these insights with my social science students.
In 2020, I received offers from both Oxford and Cambridge to study for an MSc and MPhil, respectively. Due to the public health situation, I decided to postpone my master's by a year. In autumn 2021, I started my one-year MPhil at Cambridge on a full scholarship.
My tutoring style consists of initially gauging the student’s current level, then setting out clear objectives and target grades with the student and family. For me, a tutor must be enthusiastic, engaging and sensitive to the individual’s needs, in order to bring out the best in each pupil.
I recently finished my MPhil at the University of Cambridge and am now tutoring part-time. For the other half of my week, I work as an L&D consultant, mostly with CEOs and business leaders who require climate literacy training and future-focused skills development.
I am a keen sportswoman, swimming, riding, doing yoga, and cycling in my spare time. I have cycled over 1000km across France. I enjoy scuba diving in the holidays and am PADI qualified. I also have a great love of literature. I am currently reading the french translation of Ernest Hemingway’s A Moveable Feast (Paris est une fête), following a memorable visit to his former estate in Cuba last summer. My two other pleasures are painting and gardening.
''Emma provides a platform of calm and patient teaching interjected with playful and imaginative tasks. She quickly developed a good sense of my daughter’s personality and mixes the subjects up within the lesson as well as from one lesson to the next, to ensure my daughter remains focused and moving forward with her learning. My daughter started having weekly tutoring lessons with Emma six months ago, and when she started off we both agreed that my daughter needed quite a bit of help in maths. Now, she not only enjoys maths but her grade teacher recently commented that she had “improved a ton, and is a very confident mathematician”. We put this down to Emma identifying the areas of weakness and encouraging our daughter to work on them. Emma provides me with a detailed report after each lesson to ensure I am kept up to date which I find very helpful. We are very glad to have Emma involved in our daughter’s academic development and highly recommend her as a tutor.'' (Parent of 11+ student)
