I first started tutoring for family and friends at the age of 16 and I have tutored on and off ever since. My private tutoring experience has focussed on maths and sciences for KS3, GSCE, and A level, and in biology and statistical methods for undergraduates. Most of my tutoring appointments have been long term, for an academic year or greater.
I was a BTech Assessor for a course on Tropical Forest Ecology whilst working as a researcher in Madagascar, and then as the Country Coordinator in Madagascar took on the role of BTech Invigilator, overseeing the BTech Assessors’ work.
In my career in conservation, I have carried out a lot of training and teaching as it plays to my skill set and is something I have always enjoyed. I set up and instructed on annual two-week-long teaching courses for undergraduates in conservation theory and practice, held in Hustaii National Park, Mongolia. As the Regional Wildlife Protection Coordinator and Trainer for Asia I carried out regular professional training in classroom environments, teaching patrolling and conservation skills to rangers across Africa and Asia, and have since been hired as a consultant to teach an advanced training course in Gabon. I was also contracted to write a series of training materials to be used as the new global standard for Marine Protected area SMART training.
I am a graduate from Oxford University in Biological Sciences with experience in teaching, law, and wildlife conservation. I have spent most of my career working on conservation projects around the world, with a focus on training for wildlife protection and combating poaching. Teaching has always been the most rewarding part of any job for me, whether it be private GSCE tutoring in sciences, or training a room full of wildlife rangers in Africa.
I have a flexible teaching style and like to ensure that I understand how an individual student learns in order to match my approach. For me, it is key to get to the root of any roadblocks that may be preventing a student from excelling, and ensure that they have a deep understanding of the concepts behind the methods used in maths and science.
What I do when I am not tutoring
I have decided to leave the conservation career behind to settle down in the UK. My partner and I are planning to set up a smallholding in the countryside to become semi-self-sufficient. Over the next two years I plan on tutoring near full time alongside researching small scale sustainable farming, whilst my partner finishes her teaching qualifications. We will then leave London to set up the smallholding, but I plan to continue to tutor part time, potentially online, to supplement our income.
“Julien is excellent. Not only is he thorough, efficient and effective, but made the lessons enjoyable and my son was engaged in learning. Julien is proficient as a tutor for not only biology, but maths and chemistry as well. He is punctual and conscientious in following up with progress. I cannot recommend him highly enough.”
