I have tutored family members for 11+ School Entry exams since I was 16 and two years ago decided to do this more professionally with an online company, with whom I have completed over 230 lessons. These lessons have been over a range of abilities, key-stages and ages, involving some mature and university students. I have extensive experience with students working towards GCSEs and A-Levels with AQA, OCR and Edexcel. When I was 17 I spent 5 weeks in a high school in Northern Ireland, during which I observed Biology and P.E. teachers and conducted 3 lessons to a class of 20.
I am a 23 year old PhD student at Imperial College London. Originally from Northern Ireland, I conducted my Biological Sciences degree and masters at Lancaster University.
I am a lover of all things science, having developed an affinity for Biology in particular from a young age. I have tutored Maths and Science for the last two years and thoroughly enjoy instilling my enthusiasm into young children, allowing them to look at Science and Maths in a different way. It is not all scary, I promise!
Having completed over 200 lessons over the last two years, I know that every student learns things differently, and at their own pace. As such, I use the preliminary meeting and first session getting to know what makes the individual student tick, and match my teaching technique to that.
Structuring lessons will involve the main aims stated at the start of the lesson and referring back to them at the end to make sure they were reached. I consider myself patient and am not adverse to taking time to nail a certain aspect of the specification. I also strongly believe in regularly testing of the topics taught, to ensure deep and cemented understanding.
What I do when I am not tutoring
I am a PhD student at Imperial College London, Department of Infectious Disease, School of Medicine. During my PhD, I will, in the most part, be working off my own schedule, so will be able to stick to weekly commitments without trouble. I am a keen hockey player in my spare time, but at the minute that is all on hold!
''Sarah is friendly and confident tutor, she is really hardworking and accurate. I am very satisfied with her lessons in Immunology, she prepared herself for the lesson well and was always in touch with me to give me the chance to ask any questions before the session. Thank you very much, Sarah!'' (University of Bristol student, 19)
