Since my time as a university student I have gained experience tutoring in Biology, Chemistry and Maths from GCSE to A level, as well as providing advice and preparation for Oxbridge applications.
I grew up in London and was educated at St Paul's School, where I was awarded the John Colet Scholarship at entrance. I achieved 11 A*s at GCSE and went on to complete my A levels in Biology, Chemistry, Maths and Further Maths (4 A*s). Outside of the classroom, I loved to play rugby and was a member of the 1st XV squad for my final two years at school. I also trained in the Japanese martial art Aikido to shodan black belt level.
I then pursued a Biological Natural Sciences degree at St John's College, Cambridge. Specialising in Plant Sciences, I received a First Class degree and attained the top mark in my year.
Continuing my studies at the University of Cambridge, I am now a PhD student on the BBSRC DTP Programme in Biological Sciences, working in biotechnology.
Through my own experiences studying at school and going through the application processes for top universities, I am very aware of the approaches that must be taken to maximise learning and academic success. Being able to tailor to the tutee’s needs and working at a pace that is suitable for them is the great advantage of tutoring, and I really encourage my tutees to ask any question on their mind to make sure that no stone of doubt is left unturned. This is the foundation of having a solid understanding of the content, whilst also providing an opportunity to go beyond the syllabus and help foster a keen curiosity for the subject. To then develop this understanding into exam proficiency, I put a lot of emphasis on the use of specifications and past papers to build revision material, guiding and encouraging the tutee to find the method of learning that is most natural to them.
I am currently undertaking a PhD in Biotechnology, and when I am not in the lab you’ll find me playing rugby or in the boxing ring.
