With 13 years’ experience of teaching A Level and GCSE Geography for different exam boards, in two outstanding schools, I am well equipped to support students in their Geography learning, including exam preparation. Having served as Head of Department for 8 of those 13 years, I understand the exam as a whole, having extensive experience of teaching different units (both human and physical), have led on and moderated NEA, and supported a wide range of students through their different exam periods, I am well able to advise and guide tutees.

Having tutored since 2016 I am also experienced in the tutoring setting, and have helped dozens of students over this time, including some to Oxbridge. Being an AQA examiner also helps me to keep my exam knowledge current, and as the different specifications have so many similarities, this knowledge is to all students. The annual training from AQA ensures I mark to exam board expectations, so my tutees can be confident that when I mark their work, I am marking as it would be in the exam, giving them the best preparation possible. Having a very detailed understanding of assessment objectives and mark schemes also allows me to direct students as to how to achieve top grades in the different questions.

Biography

My family is from Scotland, and thus I attended Glenalmond College, where I studied Geography, Biology, and Chemistry at A Level. I then completed a Bachelor of Science degree in Geology at the University of Durham, obtaining a 2.1. I moved to London to complete my PGCE at the IOE, and remained in the capital since. My first teaching job was for 4 years in Bermondsey, before moving onto The Latymer School in Enfield. I became Head of Department and worked there for 9 years. I had a son in 2023, and left the classroom in 2024, to look after him. I tutor in the evenings and weekends.

Approach to Tutoring

Every tutee learns in a different way, and as such I tailor my lessons to suit the individual. However, I have found that consistent structure to my lessons, exam technique confidence, and practical and useful resources to be the most valuable ways I can support each student. Focussing on exam board specifications and past papers, allows my tutees to improve their content knowledge, whilst also improving their understanding of how to apply that knowledge to the questions. Ensuring lessons are fun and a happy place to be also goes a long way to productive sessions. I tailor my style to each student, but ensure the same rigour and support is provided for all.

When not tutoring

Having left the classroom in 2024, I am loving tutoring in the evenings and weekends as it keeps me connected to my vocation. Looking after my toddler fills my days, and renovating a very tired house has provided lots of opportunity to hone my DIY skills! I am also a keen tennis player and cook.
