Besides guiding students through specific exams, I can help with interview preparation, essay and study skills and general learning support.
My students have earned places at leading independent schools such as Harrow, St Paul's, Westminster, Dulwich and Cheltenham Ladies' College, and a number of them have gone on to study History or Classics at Oxbridge.
I'm an American and grew up in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. After completing my BA in Latin at the University of Oregon, I worked as a translator, political analyst and journalist in Mexico City, Berlin and Rome, and subsequently earned an MA with Distinction in European History from King's College London and Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. I then taught a range of subjects, including English, Maths, History and Classics at an independent school in South Kensington and have tutored students in languages and the humanities since 2017.
I believe the tutor's role is to show students what they are capable of -- it's often more than they realise! I put value on being a patient and encouraging listener, which helps to improve confidence and animate intellectual curiosity. I am always alert to opportunities to engage students' imagination and talents, to address their anxieties, and foster awareness of their own capabilities.
I encourage my students to take ownership of their goals and responsibility for their study habits. I'm extremely familiar with the exams in the subjects I teach and make sure they know just what to expect, so that they can plan realistically, work confidently and achieve their best results.
What I do when I am not tutoring
Pre-pandemic, my passions were travelling, architecture and movies. At the moment, I spend a lot of time playing with my baby daughter, cooking, reading and gardening at our allotment.
‘We are very pleased to let you know our son got a 9 on his Latin GCSE. The school predicted 7-8, so this is a great and wonderful surprise. Many thanks for your dedication and helping him to achieve this.’ (Mother of GCSE Latin student)
‘I got back my GCSE results, and wanted to inform you that I got a 9 in History! I am quite surprised and happy that I got this grade. Thank you very much again for all the lessons you have provided me!’ (IGCSE History student)
‘My son has enjoyed his lessons with Daniel. They struck up a very good rapport. He did well in his exams achieving a merit in Latin at CE; he's heading to Westminster School in the autumn.’ (Mother of 13+ Latin student)
'We received the Ancient History result today and my son attained an A!!... and an offer from his first choice university. Cannot thank you enough!' (Mother of A-Level History and Ancient History student)
‘My son is getting along very well with Daniel and has scored the highest grades in his class for Latin. Thank you very much for that. Daniel is a soothing personality and he looks forward to his lessons with him.’ (Mother of Y6 Latin student)
‘I am so pleased with my daughter's progress and, more importantly, so is she!’ (Mother of beginning Latin student)
'Thank you so much for your help throughout my A levels, you transformed my writing and understanding of ancient Rome.' (A Level Classical Civilisation student)
