I'm an American from the rainy, beautiful Pacific Northwest and have lived in London since 2014. Prior to that I lived in Mexico City, Berlin and Rome, where I studied and worked as a translator, a political analyst and journalist, picking up fluency in a number of foreign languages along the way. I'm an aspiring historian and hold an MA with Distinction in European History (King's College London/Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin), specializing in the history of London and other European cities. I completed my undergraduate studies in Latin at the University of Oregon.
Since moving to London I have worked as a tutor for several years and taught History, Maths and English at a private boys' school in South Kensington.
I believe the tutor's role is to show students what they are capable of -- it's often more than they realise! I put value on being a patient and encouraging listener, which helps to improve confidence and animate intellectual curiosity. I am always alert to opportunities to engage students' imagination and talents, to address their anxieties, and foster awareness of their own capabilities.
I encourage my students to take ownership of their goals and responsibility for their study habits. I'm extremely familiar with the exams in the subjects I teach and make sure they know just what to expect, so that they can plan realistically, work confidently and achieve their best results.
What I do when I am not tutoring
Besides tutoring I also work occasionally as a translator in several languages and am preparing applications to doctoral programs to research the history of cities and public space. I'm a keen gardener and traveller and enjoy books and film.
‘We are very pleased to let you know our son got a 9 on his Latin GCSE. The school predicted 7-8, so this is a great and wonderful surprise. Many thanks for your dedication and helping him to achieve this.’
‘I got back my GCSE results, and wanted to inform you that I got a 9 in History! I am quite surprised and happy that I got this grade. Thank you very much again for all the lessons you have provided me!’
‘My son has enjoyed his lessons with Daniel. They struck up a good rapport. He did well in his exams achieving a merit in Latin at CE; he's heading to Westminster School in the autumn.’
‘My son is getting along very well with Daniel and has scored the highest grades in his class for Latin. Thank you very much for that. Daniel is a soothing personality and he looks forward to his lessons with him.’
‘My daughter has often been bored in her language classes, either because she wasn't challenged or the tutor didn't understand how to make online lessons engaging. I am so pleased with her progress and, more importantly, so is she!’
