I started tutoring while at university and worked with two students on a long-term basis. I began to gather significant tutoring hours with multiple students in 2022, while still in full time employment. Since that time I have taught with a primary focus on GCSE English Literature and English Language. I have seen enormous progress with my tutees who in mock or final exams have had scores on average two grades higher than their previous predictions.
I have worked with a student who had been diagnosed with ADHD, and developed several exercises and techniques for holding focus.
I also teach at primary school age and have experience working with students who speak English as a second language. I have taught comprehension and writing as preparation for 11+, and numeracy and literacy at year one level.
I am a highly sensitive, dedicated, full-time tutor based in the centre of London. I grew up in Lancaster and attended Lancaster Royal Grammar School, achieving 11 A*s at GCSE and A-levels in English Literature, Maths, History and Physics. I went on to study English at Edinburgh where I gained a first class degree. Having found a love of Shakespeare I came to London to undertake an MA in Shakespeare Studies at KCL and the Globe Theatre, attaining pass with distinction.
I have worked recently as manager and recruitment manager for Waterstones at the flagship branch in Piccadilly. I have a great love for reading, writing and creativity in all forms which I make sure to bring to my lessons.
I find a tailored approach for each individual student. I am able to push high achieving tutees in English towards complex analysis and thorough understanding of context and allusion. With students who are struggling more I am patient, encouraging and set realistic lesson objectives.
I always begin from the premise that any student can be encouraged to be passionate about language and literature. To this end I introduce them to books and stories they wouldn't necessary come across in class, drawing on my background to make use of exciting and interesting passages from sci-fi, fantasy and contemporary literature.
I make efforts to find the approach that will bridge the gap between a student's interest and the subject they may not (yet) love. For example, I make use of spatial, visual and problem-solving techniques with maths and science-oriented pupils to help them think about humanities subjects in a different way.
I have taught a small group of students at once and have been able to pay distinct attention to their different needs, while conducting the same lesson plan with both.
I am a full-time tutor and am flexible and available to teach lessons on weekdays and weekends.
My free time is largely spent reading and writing fiction and non-fiction.
''Ben supported me through my English Lit GCSEs. He is brilliantly qualified in Shakespeare, he explains the historical context and makes the subject interesting. He’s also very approachable and makes sessions engaging and good fun.'' (Former student)
''Ben was a huge asset to my son during his GCSE year with his English Language and Literature revision. My son had a statement at school for speech and language difficulties. He looked forward to his tutoring sessions with Ben who was always reliable and punctual. Teaching was based on the exam syllabus, appropriate homework was set and marked with encouragement. Ultimately Ben helped my son achieve good passes in both his English GSCEs.'' (Former client)
''I have known and worked closely with Ben for a few years now, and highly recommend him as a tutor. He is an enthusiatic and experienced tutor who is always prepared for lessons, but who also takes a flexible approach so he can engage with each individual student and cater each lesson so it will suit their needs. Ben is committed to helping his students grow and succeed. His communication with parents, students and management is always prompt. I cannot recommend Ben enough.'' (Colleague and fellow tutor)
