Since 2017, I have had over 300 hours of online tutoring experience in Maths, Latin and Ancient Greek. I have helped four successful Oxbridge applications in the last two years. I have taught students from ages 11-18 including A level and IB.
I am a fully qualified Maths, Latin and Ancient Greek Tutor (PGCE with QTS). Since graduating from Christ Church, Oxford with a 2:1 in Classics, I have taught at two UK Independent schools over the last three years. I taught at two SBC Summer Schools as an activity coordinator while at University and spent my gap year teaching at a primary school in Auckland, New Zealand.
Within the Classical world, my main interests are Homer, Greek Tragedy, 5th Century Greek History, Virgil and Ovid.
Since graduating from Christ Church, Oxford with a 2.1 in Classics, I have taught Maths, Further Maths, Latin and Ancient Greek at Bryanston School (2020-2022 where I completed my PGCE in Maths) and Haileybury (2022-current). The experience I have gained is invaluable and has given me insight into the problems faced by classroom teaching and hence how best to help in one to one tuition. I have also been an active part of the exam process and intimately know the pressures which that will bring. My experience helps me to support my students in whatever way they need.
I went to Tonbridge School where I was head boy and achieved four A*s at A level (Maths, Further Maths, Latin and Ancient Greek) and 12 A*s at GCSE. Revision was always natural for me and I developed an array of revision techniques depending on the subjects I am working on.
I like to let the student be as independent as possible. My aim is to be a support, but for the student to lead their learning. This involves them finding areas of weakness, noting and correcting their own mistakes and therefore being active in their own learning. I do not spoon feed answers, but create a scaffold in which students are able to improve at their own rate.
I love the outdoors and play rugby for my local club. I am also a regular attendee at a CrossFit gym and I love exploring my local woods. I play a lot of chess and bridge and relish the challenge of the daily cryptic crossword in The Times!
''Richard spent part of his PGCE at The Blandford School and made a great impression on students, fellow teachers in the faculty and around the school in this short time. His eager anticipation of suggestions and advice and his acting upon these whilst maintaining his style has made him an outstanding mentee and will undoubtedly pay off in the future wherever he choses to go. If I was in a position to employ teachers at the school and thus chose who I work with, Richard would right up there in the top few of my list.'' (PGCE Mentor)
''Using an online platform, Richard taught my son first in GCSE Latin, and then for part of the A level curriculum in classical Greek (neither were not offered in his school, he did both in his own time, and has since completed A levels in both). Richard is a truly inspirational teacher: the clarity of his teaching, his ability to make even seemingly dry grammatical probelms fascinating, and his unfailing pedagogic enthusiasm and dedication motivated my son not only to excel, but also to want to read Classics at university. We cannot recommend Richard highly enough!'' (Former client)
''Reliable, kind, imaginative, and tireless in his pursuit of excellence, Richard is an outstanding man of boundless potential. He possesses a sharp, mathematically gifted brain, yet presents perceptive soft skills that belie his age. A role model to all ages, Richard is immediately impressive and inspirational; it’s been a great privilege to work with him.'' (Former employer)
