I am an inspiring educator whose role has been to attract children from underprivileged and BAME (black, Asian and minority ethnic) backgrounds into STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths). I have also used the strength of the creative arts to support the engagement of children, with writing, leading to significant accelerated progress.
I have an extensive knowledge and understanding of systems and strategies used in the education sector both in the UK and internationally, having worked in the Middle East and East Africa. I have worked in primary education in a teaching and management capacity since 2005, before which I worked for the Department of Education. It was working at the Department that spurred my interest in education and specifically primary education. Prior to that I studied Psychology at the University of the West of England in Bristol and then completed an MSc in Child Development at the Institute of Education - University of London.
Leading positive change and improvement in schools has helped me to develop a range of key skills which can be transferrable across a range of different industries. I have introduced and implemented new systems (curriculums and assessment tracking systems) which has involved the training and levelling-up of staff and implementing/assessing the effectiveness and impact of these through improved results and engagement by all key stakeholders. Leading change has involved ongoing mentoring, coaching, monitoring and assessing everyday teaching practice and performance.
My passion project across all schools has been to provide young people the opportunity to aspire to be something when they are older through providing them access to people from a range of professions, including esteemed scientists such as Lord Robert Winston, Sir Paul Nurse and Baroness Susan Greenfield.
Having tutored a great number of students over the years I have found that each of them learns and makes sense of their subjects in very particular ways. As such, I always try to match my teaching style with the learning style of my student. I consider myself patient yet energetic and am not averse to using games and memory techniques to enhance learning. I have a great interest in learning strategies, and understanding the myriad ways in which pupils absorb information.
I am a primary school teacher and curriculum lead.
Outside of teaching/tutoring I enjoy everything London has to offer such as the festivals (music, cultural, art), art exhibitions/installations, theatre/concerts, going on long walks locally and beyond, exploring London's green spaces and exploring new places here and further afield as well sampling the amazing dining options London has.
I also volunteer with a local food bank and at various literary/wellbeing festivals (e.g. Open City, FT).

'Jamil is an excellent teacher and coach. He was great tutoring both my daughters and provided them a framework to apply their knowledge and built their confidence to face the exams from a place of strength.' (Parent of 11+ students)
'Jamil is a highly professional educator with extensive knowledge of the education system in the UK and excellent interpersonal skills. I met Jamil when he joined the teaching staff at my children’s primary school. The school had a variety of pupils stemming from all sorts of socioeconomic backgrounds - with my own children having a BAME background. Jamil was unique amongst other teachers at the school; he not only encouraged but pushed my children to engage in a number of extracurricular activities which led to exceptional growth both academically and personally. He was particularly good at spotting academic potential and endeavoured to maximise prospects for each and every one of his pupils. Jamil served as a real source of inspiration and motivation for everyone he taught; a truly supportive and approachable role model at the school. Even over a decade after parting ways with Jamil, both my children still attest a large proportion of their successful transition into secondary school to him. Jamil would undoubtably be a tremendous asset to any team/organisation and has my highest recommendation!' (Parent of a Year 5 child I used to teach.)
'Jamil can successfully manage and coach learners at different levels and with different cultural backgrounds. He is used to systematically adapting his teaching to address each student’s needs. Jamil is a great team player and always ready to share resources and to step in to help where needed. His personality and professional expertise will be an asset for any institution.'
