As well as teaching 2nd year lab at Imperial College, I used to assist in the teaching of 1st year Physics/ Maths seminars at the University of Leeds.
In the summer of 2018 I completed a 4 week paid internship at a secondary school in Halifax, teaching Maths and Science to KS3/4 students. I have also privately tutored Maths and Science to GCSE and A-level students. Additionally, I have helped with both UCAS applications and interview preparation.
I was born and grew up in Yorkshire and went on to study a BSc and MSci in Physics at the University of Leeds, receiving a first-class honours in both and was one of the top achieving students in my year group. During my time at Leeds I was awarded two paid summer research projects (2017 & 2018) which involved undertaking cutting-edge research in collaboration with technology companies. I also helped out students in the years below from my 2nd year through to 4th year through assisting in teaching seminars and peer-assessment learning sessions.
I recently moved to London to study a PhD in experimental solid-state Physics at Imperial College London, with my research focus on quantum computing and also currently assist in teaching an undergraduate course. I aim to pursue a career in research after completion of my doctorate studies.
During my time as a student I have used my summer breaks to travel the world, having traveled all around South-East Asia and Australia.
I always try and tailor my style to the specific needs of the student; responding dynamically to the needs/ abilities of the student and maintaining a supportive and inspiring learning environment for the student to thrive.
I put an emphasis on trying to keep the tutorials as practical as possible. I like to use past exam questions and other exercises to cement knowledge and track progress.
Outside of Physics I am a keen golfer and tennis player as well as an avid Leeds United fan! I also enjoy exploring London's great selection of food markets and museums. Having done a lot of travelling I hope to eventually explore some new places after finishing my PhD; Japan is currently top of the bucket list and South America a close second.
Declan was a great help in helping Evie apply the knowledge she had to answering exam questions and also boosting her confidence in the subject. (Mother of GCSE Maths student)
Declan helped me with understanding the more difficult concepts of the course which I struggled with and his passion for Physics makes it easy to enjoy working with him. (A-level Physics student)
Declan tutored my son Edan Physics with great professionalism and gave a lot of insight. (Father of A-level Physics student)
