Josh studied Neuroscience at Cambridge and tutored during this time. Since graduating in 2017 Josh has been teaching Maths and Science up to A Level. He aims to teach his students how to learn and prepares them for future studies as well as exams.

My tutoring career began when I ran a lunchtime class called Maths for Chemists during my own A-Levels, a class created to help students who studied Chemistry but not Maths. I loved teaching from that moment, and quickly learnt that teaching is not simply about knowledge, but much more about being able to communicate that knowledge to a range of different learners.
I then began tutoring professionally in my last year of University, providing online tuition for students nationwide. After graduating I began tutoring face-to-face in Surrey in London, which is what I've remained doing for the past five years. I now specialise in tutoring A-Level Science and Maths, as well as higher education admissions.
I have also worked as a higher education consultant for Godalming College, for their Aim Higher programme, and as an Education officer for an Arts an outreach tour of Asia, helping to guide international students in how to apply to Oxbridge and British Universities.
I am an enthusiastic, experienced and personal tutor who has been tutoring Science and Maths for over 5 years. I took my A-Levels at Godalming College, where I received 3 A*s and an A in the sciences and maths, respectively. From there I went to study Natural Sciences at the University of Cambridge. I specialised in Neuroscience, writing my dissertation on alternative therapies for PTSD, and I graduated in 2017. I have been tutoring since graduating, for a wide range of adults, children and teens. I have a passion for learning, for teaching, and for finding ways of making science plainly understandable.
My approach is to instil an understanding - not a memorisation - of any topic I cover, and to link all work done back to exam style questions. This gives students the flexibility to adapt to any question they may find in an exam and prepares them well for future learning.
I believe that all of my tutoring sessions are entirely my student's time. I encourage them to direct the lesson to match their needs; letting me know what's working, what isn't, what makes sense and what needs more time. Tutoring is far more personal and focussed than classroom teaching, so the more a student can tell me about what resonates with them, the more directed and effective the lesson will be.
I also aim to teach my students how to learn. Within my degree, I studied the sciences of memory, cognition and critical thinking. In my sessions, I include novel, proven techniques to help my students understand and deconstruct what is required of them for an exam, how to revise so the information sticks around, and how best to position their personal strengths to succeed.
When not tutoring, I love the making and partaking of art, in which I utilise a surprising amount of Science and Maths. I'm a freelance videographer for theatres and artists, and I make commercials, short films and music videos. In my free time I'm a keen reader, and I am also interested in computers, wood-working and music. I'm currently learning to play the piano, so I know all too well what it's like to be a student, struggling with something new!
''Josh was great - quickly bonded with X (who isn’t easy) and got him focused.''
''Josh was excellent. He was very focused and was able to answer all of X's questions.''
''Josh is reliable and friendly and I would highly recommend him as an academic tutor or EPQ mentor. He is inspiring and makes difficult topics more accessible. His patience as a tutor is fantastic and his ability to offer new explanations to further understanding has been so helpful.''
''Josh is very effective in the support he provides and very much tailors his input and work programme to the particular needs of the person he is tutoring. This can range from effective teaching of the more challenging aspects of the subject that haven't sunk in, through refresher coaching, to overseeing and marking test questions.''
''Josh is particularly good at helping his tutees to understand how to revise more effectively and in exam technique.''
''Josh has a very effective working style, disciplined without being directive or over-bearing, and I would thoroughly recommend him to anyone looking for maths and science support.''
