I have been tutoring for the past 4 years, working as a self-employed tutor through a number of the top tutoring firms in London before joining Keystone as a full-time, Professional Tutor, in August 2020. I completed my PGCE at the Institute of Education and worked as a secondary school geography teacher in two inner-London schools.
I have helped a wide range of students, spanning 8+ to 6th Form, and I have had experience working with students with SEN. I have been successful in placing 11+ and 13+ students at Sevenoaks and University College School. I am particularly interested in building students' vocabulary and sense of independence. Having graduated from Oxford, I have assisted a handful of students with their Oxbridge applications, from personal statements to interview practice.
I was born in East London to Nigerian parents, and spent my younger years living in Essex. As the oldest of four girls, I have helped with countless homework assignments over the years. When my parents moved to Nigeria, I attended a boarding school, Christ’s Hospital, which I loved and became my home for 7 years. As a part of the first cohort to study the IB at my school, I studied English, Geography and History at Higher Level, and Latin, Product Design and Mathematical Studies at the Standard Level and achieved 40 points. I graduated from the University of Oxford with a 2:1 in Geography. After university, I travelled to Nigeria and directed and produced a documentary in Lagos.
I completed my PGCE at the Institute of Education, UCL where I had the opportunity to work with a wide range of students and sharpen my practice. I am completing a Masters in African Studies at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), where I have had the opportunity to present conference papers and learn how to read and write Yoruba.
Over the years I have learnt to adapt my teaching style according to the needs of my students. Many of the students I have taught are afraid to make mistakes and lack confidence. A large part of my tutoring consists of increasing my student's confidence and stretching them beyond their perceived abilities. I enjoy using games, real-life incidences and personal stories to drive the point home for my students, in order to show them how important learning is for their everyday lives.
I am finishing a Master's in African Studies at the School Oriental and African Studies (SOAS). In the next few years, I am looking to work in TV production (alongside my tutoring) and I may potentially apply for a PhD! My main passion in life is eating food!
''My first lesson with Seyi was excellent, I really like her teaching style - she is very engaging and encouraging. She explains thing simply and her feedback for my essays was very constructive and useful. The lesson has definitely given me confidence for my upcoming exams.'' (Undergraduate Geography Student)
‘Seyi taught both of our daughters English, one for her 13+ entry exams and the other one for year 4. We found her to be very friendly, reliable and understanding of our daughter’s needs. She identified their gaps and individually supported their learning, challenging them without putting pressure on them. Our girls enjoyed their lessons and always looked forward to the next lesson. We also appreciate her instant detailed feedback, which helped us understand their progress. As a result of Seyi's teaching, our older daughter did very well in her English entrance exams (ranked 27th out of 300 students) at a top independent school (Sevenoaks), whilst our younger daughter was able to improve her English grade. I highly recommend Seyi, seeing that she is very experienced, approachable and delivered the results we hoped for!’ - Mother of two daughters
‘Seyi tutored my son for his UKISET for University College School. His confidence improved drastically, and he has been putting much more effort into his work. Seyi really worked to improve his confidence, and she is a big reason he gained a place at UCS.’ - Father of UKiset student
