I am currently a Lecturer in Fine Art at the Glasgow School of Art, with previous experiene lecturing in Fine Art Critical Studies at Goldsmiths College, University of London. My specialism is in art practice and theory, and throughout my own studies (BA to PhD) I have facilitated seminars and group critiques as well conducted one-to-one tutorials up to postgraduate level in this field. I am working my way through an academic career, and in conjunction with this have lectured at various academic and public institutions, as well as published scholarly texts in peer-reviewed journals. This experience has equipped me with the skills to tutor in academic writing in a variety of subjects within the arts and beyond, from Social Work and Architecture, to English Literature and Finance.
In addition to higher education insitutional experience, I have been tutoring in KS2 & KS3 Maths and English since 2011, as well as preparing students for 7+, 11+ and 13+ common entrance exams in Maths, English, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning. In my freelance tutoring this is the most common request I recieve and therefore I have most experience in these areas and age groups; however, I have also taught the Norwegian Language, KS3 Science and Academic Writing. These diverse teaching pathways have meant that over the past couple of years I have had the pleasure of working with an extremely diverse set of students, ranging in age from 6-68, some of whom do not have English as their first language, experience learning difficulties, are neurodivergent, or are getting back on track after an interruption to their studies.
I tutor in Academic Writing & Research, Art Practice and Critical Studies in the Arts up to postgraduate level, as well as preparing applications and portfolios for Foundation, BA and MA degrees in the arts. In addition to my private tutoring, I am also a Lecturer in Fine Art at the Glasgow School of Art.
Although art is my specialism, I have been tutoring children up to and including Year 9 in maths, English and science for 12 years, and have extensive experience preparing students for the 11+ and 13+ exams.
I hold a BA with First Class Honours in Fine Art from Wimbledon College of Arts, and an MA with Distinction in Fine Art from Central Saint Martins, London. I have recently completed a PhD in Art at Goldsmiths College, where I also taught Fine Art Critical Studies before taking up a lecturing position at the Glasgow School of Art. I have facilitated BA seminars, tutored MA students in art dissertations, lectured numerous times at conferences, and regularly publish scholarly work. I am a practising artist, with recent shows including Bloomberg New Contemporaries 2021, as well as work shown at the South London Gallery, Tate Modern and the Chisenhale. I therefore have particularly valuable experience to share with students interested in the arts, but have also tutored academic writing in a variety of subjects, from Social Work and English Literature, to Finance and Art History.
I was born in the United Kingdom but am fluent in 3 languages (including Norwegian and Serbian). Having had a multicultural upbringing has helped me relate to people from a wide range of backgrounds and interests.
I help students make the most of their subject by fostering enjoyment in the learning process, improving both grades, but, more importantly, developing a sustainable, independent approach to learning that can be taken beyond tuition and into further years of study, work and life.
My approach is holistic, in that I always seek to strengthen the foundations of a student's learning, going back to the roots of the knowledge they are finding difficult to grasp. We then work upwards from there, removing gaps in knowledge and giving the student firmer ground upon which to develop. This is usually a satisfying process for them - they experience their gradual mastery of a subject.
I value this strategy far more highly over quick fixes, as I find a holistic approach based on appreciation for the subject and its real relevance in turn has a much stronger and lasting effect on the student's academic performance, as it is both quantitatively and qualitatively assessed.
I am a practising artist and researcher working in film, performance, drawing and writing. I regularly exhibit and publish my work in art galleries, theatres and journals. My long-term ambition is to become a prominent actor in my field both as a practictioner and academic, and to share and cultivate my practice and knowledge through teaching in higher education. I train fencing, go on hikes around Wales where I live at the moment, and am an avid reader of contemporary fiction. Currently I tutor privately after school hours, when I find working with children a wonderful change from academic life.

''I have, thus far, had one lesson with Katarina, and I found her to be an excellent tutor. My lesson was for degree level English, and Katarina's teaching very much helped me to understand and correct my errors in essay writing – we read through two essays I had written, both of which she had had a read through before the lesson and had marked to a great extent; during the lesson she allowed me to re-read my work and explain in greater depth some of the arguments I had made so that I could see for myself the ways I could improve, before delving deeper into the essay to speak more on what she believed were my strengths and where and how I could improve.
Katarina teaches with the utmost attention and is very kind and considerate!''
