I am currently tutoring several students at 11+ (Maths and English) and 13+ (Maths and Science) in preparation for common entrance (to schools including Harrodian, Wetherby, Harrow, King Edward VI, Francis Holland, St. Paul's, Radley, Wellington, Latymer and Dulwich), working on their core knowledge and exam technique. Three of my students have successfully gained entry to their desired schools this year, with the rest currently awaiting results/yet to sit entrance exams. I am also tutoring several GCSE and A-Level students in Maths.
My first experience of tutoring came about during my A-Level years at school, when I tutored Maths, Physics and Chemistry to classmates and also GCSE students. They all proceeded to improve performance in these subjects and gave me positive feedback about my teaching style. I found this incredibly rewarding and it kindled in me a desire to take this up as a career at some point in the future; having been fully trained by Keystone, I am pleased to say that time has now come.
My passion lies in tutoring Maths at all ages. It is not the most easily relatable subject in real world terms, and I love being able to enhance a student's understanding by giving them examples of the subject's use in everyday life; I find this almost immediately makes it more interesting and is an effective way to bolster confidence in the subject for those that find it difficult. However, my approach is always tailored depending on the individual.
I have seven years' worth of industrial experience under my belt, and am in the advantageous position of being able to use this to articulate abstract concepts in Maths and Science. I have worked in R&D, front-end design and operation of chemical plants, as well as software-based smart energy; this is quite a varied career history and has included extensive application of multiple components of Maths, English, and all three Science subjects. This often sparks interesting discussions with students and leads to discovery of an underlying interest in subjects that was previously not apparent.
I also tutor English up to 13+ level; my command of the language is excellent, both in written and spoken forms. I thoroughly enjoy the lesson environment and build it around conversations between my students and myself, leading to natural improvements in their vocabulary and sentence structure, before assigning work appropriately to enable them to perform to the necessary standard under timed conditions. My own skills continue to be enhanced by my writing both in music and comedy.
I studied at Stafford International School in Colombo, Sri Lanka. At A-Level, I took Physics, Chemistry, Maths and Further Maths (4 As) before going to Loughborough University to study Chemical Engineering (2:1 Hons.), which included a year in industry.
Following university, I worked in core process engineering for my placement company in North Yorkshire for just over five years, during which time I qualified as a Chartered Engineer, before moving to London in 2015 to work at a clean tech-based start-up company.
I enjoy tutoring a great deal as I have always wanted to do it, and it gives me an opportunity to utilise my passion for mentoring and for the subjects themselves. Feedback from parents and students alike has been overwhelmingly positive so far!
I believe that my good-humoured nature, coupled with my driven personality and love for efficiency, make me an approachable and effective tutor. I can also bring my industrial experience to bear on situations where real world applications of seemingly mundane topics can sometimes be difficult to find.
Having been tutored for several years as a child myself, I understand the difficulty of the situation, whether it feels necessary or unnecessary. My goal is to convey my aptitude and natural love for learning and the subject matter to the child, in the most enjoyable way possible.
What I do when I am not tutoring
In my spare time, I am an amateur musician, stand-up comedian, and have a keen interest in fitness & nutrition. I can normally be found at concert venues or comedy clubs, both in performance and audience capacities, lifting heavy things in a gym, or out exploring my surroundings. I was also previously a competitive ballroom & Latin-American dancer but unfortunately put it to one side a couple of years ago due to time constraints. I hope to pick it up again soon.
I also continue to work on clean tech/renewable energy projects, focusing on grid resilience in the UK via technical innovation.
