- All of my students have experienced a significant increase in confidence in their skills and knowledge as a result of my approach.
- All of my students have reported that they have enjoyed our sessions and become more engaged with their subjects as a result.
- Before starting tutoring, my first job after graduating from Cambridge was teaching English and History to French 13+ and 16+ students in the UK.
- During my time in the House of Commons, I worked regularly with students in the constituency - both in the Palace of Westminster and in their schools - teaching them about British politics and Political and Constitutional History.
I have experience of:
- 11+ English and Maths: ISEB and public school entrance exams
- 13+ English, Maths and History: ISEB and public school entrance exams
- GCSE and AS/A2 History for OCR, Edexcel and AQA, with expertise in modern and early modern British History, Colonial History and Modern European and American History

I graduated with first class honours in History from Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, where I was a scholar. I then went on to a master's degree in the History and Philosophy of Science.
At Cambridge, I was the Captain of the university cycling team, national student 25 mile time trial champion, varsity champion and awarded a full blue. I was also the organist of Churchill College, Cambridge and have a distinction in grade 8 organ.
Before Cambridge, I attended Ipswich School in Suffolk, where I grew up. I was awarded 11 GCSEs all at grade A* - including maths, French, German, Italian and Latin - and A grades in my three A' levels - History, English and French. I also achieved distinctions in Advanced Extension Award History and English.
After university, I worked for three years in the House of Commons as a speechwriter and researcher to a Member of Parliament in the Department for Education team. I went on to become a Special Adviser and speechwriter to a Cabinet Minister, where I remained until winning a scholarship to study law.
I know only too well how easy it is to feel overwhelmed by expectations to perform. I have been through entrance exams, public exams, Oxbridge interviews and Oxbridge finals, all the while juggling commitments to music and sport. Ultimately, though, I believe that setting yourself clear objectives and challenging yourself to meet them is one of the most enjoyable and rewarding things a young person can do. To help my students achieve this, I always make sure their individual needs are at the centre of my teaching, focusing on:
- developing organisational skills to build up a student’s ability to plan their learning independently;
- identifying weaknesses and putting in place the analytic skills to overcome them;
- mapping out a strategy for success in the classroom and the exam hall; and,
- reinforcing what students accomplish in the classroom and helping them to build confidence in themselves to achieve more at school.
Above all, I believe that learning is inherently fun, even though there are times when this may not seem so. I endeavour to draw on my own enthusiasm and passion to get my students to embrace the thrill of intellectual enquiry and the rewards of problem solving, inspiring them to push themselves further and challenge themselves to meet their ambitions.
What I do when I am not tutoring
I am currently studying for my bar exams at the University of law, where I am a President's Scholar and a scholar of Middle Temple, before going on to a pupillage at a top set of commercial chancery barristers' chambers. I tutor part-time and enjoy doing so for as many hours each week as possible.
When not studying or tutoring, I enjoy reading as widely as possible, discovering new roads in the south of England on my bike and exploring fresh repertoire on the piano and organ - especially the music of J. S. Bach, which has always helped me to make sense of things.
"It was really good, a resounding success. Tom seemed very open and upbeat and Sam was very impressed. He found him extremely helpful and was enthusiastic about the sessions." Mother of previous student.
"William, our son, passed the 11plus into KCS and is delighted about it. Thank you so much for all your highly insightful guidance, and thanks to Tom Morris - a brilliant tutor. What he did so effectively with William was help him to relax and believe in himself." Parent of 11+ student.
"We are so pleased with Tom. He is a very capable tutor and is able to get the best out of the people he works with. Even in the event that my daughter does not get a place at Oxford, the experience of being tutored by Tom will be invaluable and will accompany her for ever." (Father of Oxford University History candidate)
I just wanted to thank you very much for all the work you did with my son. He is in Oxford at the moment and by all accounts the history interview went ok yesterday but he didn’t think the Classic’s one went well today. Whatever the outcome he wouldn’t have been so well prepared without you. As I left him yesterday morning he was reading through your e-mail about what to do.As soon as we hear anything we will of course let you know. Many, many thanks for your time and enthusiasm." Mother of Oxbridge Candidate
'Tom was extremely helpful. The personal statement is hugely improved and he had some very helpful insights into the university choices.' (Mother of A level student hoping to read History at university)
I wanted to let you know that my daughter recently passed her entrance exam to St Michael's Grammar School, reaching the 63rd place out of 403 applicants and only 96 places available. She scored 141/141 in English and 138/141 in verbal reasoning.
Whilst our daughter is a very dedicated and hard working little girl, these truly outstanding results would not have been achieved without the game-changing support provided by Tom Morris.
The influence Tom had on our daughter with regards to her verbal and English altitudes has been instrumental. Through exercises and reading, he tremendously helped our daughter improve on her style and expression. I am very indebted to Tom for helping us secure such a fantastic school, where competition was extremely fierce."
'My son had a truly fantastic result in Russian History - 119/120; almost 100%. Overall in history for A2 he got 99% as he got 78/80 for the coursework element. A very different story from his AS history results and testament to the tangible improvement Tom made to his essay writing and exam skills. Thank you very much for his wonderful input. He learnt such a lot from Tom I think this year.'
From Oxbridge applicants:
''Thank you so much for all your help throughout the entire process - even if I hadn't received an offer, the sessions we had really gave me a new insight to History that allowed me to develop my thinking as a historian and that is something I'm very grateful for. The discussions we had opened my eyes to things about History that would never have occurred to me and inspired me to really challenge the ideas within History that I encounter. Of course, your essay structuring and interview tips were also very helpful!'' -- Oxford history applicant.
''I have stopped my daily routine to answer your mail, this is just a small indication of how pleased we all are with Tom. He is a very capable tutor and is able to get the best out of the people he works with.
