Maths Edexcel IGCSE Course Description
This course has a dual focus - first to make sure that students are comfortable with fundamental mathematical techniques, but also to develop understanding of how to apply these techniques effectively when problem solving. In essence, the aim of the course is not only to refine mathematical language, but to draw disparate topics into closer relationship.
Maths AQA GCSE Course Description
The focus for this course is to develop students' knowledge and understanding around a range of complicated topics, allowing them to apply these skills to solving multi-layered problems. The course will also examine how to systematically show working to achieve higher grades in exams.
Edexcel Course Outline
Day 1: Algebra/Numerical
The topics covered here will be primarily numerical and algebraic, the focus being on technique, layout, and those tricks that allow for more effective mathematical working. There would also be a focus on effectively converting written questions into algebraic representation [Incl. fractions, factorising, indices, surds] and building towards L7-9 problem solving questions through the course of the lesson.
Day 2: Functions/Graphs
Recap of previous day's major points/chance for students to bring forward questions that they want addressing. There will be a shift of focus to algebraic application in functions, both linear and quadratic. Graphically representing algebraic expressions is a tricky process and we would look at ways to overcome these difficulties.
Day 3: Geometry
This will include, but not be limited to, trigonometry and pythagoras in both 2-D and 3-D. Again, we would build towards problem solving questions that would make use of the techniques covered on the first day.
Day 4: Statistics
The primary focuses would be probability tree diagrams and Venn diagrams. Again, we will build towards problem solving questions that, in the context of statistics, demand strong algebraic ability. There will be time set aside at the end to address any questions.
Detailed feedback: An end of course report is sent on completion detailing the student’s achievements and areas for further work.
AQA Course Outline
Day 1: Algebra and Number
During this day the focus will be on understanding how to apply knowledge and understanding of Algebra topics to examination style questions. The topics reviewed will include quadratic equations, algebraic expressions and fractions, surds, laws of indices and equations of straight lines.
Day 2: Probability and Statistics
In this session, we will cover topics including probability trees, probability equations and Venn Diagrams. We will review the terminology and symbols related to each and the techniques required to work through questions. In addition, we will review representing data on different types of graph including cumulative frequency graphs and histograms.
Day 3: Geometry
Our main focus during this lesson will be to review trigonometry, sine rule and cosine rule questions. We will study more complicated questions involving several techniques and also look at questions using trigonometry in 3D. In addition, we will review solving vector proof questions.
Day 4: Problem Solving
The focus on this day will be on solving grade 8 / 9 multilayered questions across a range of topics. We will review how to break these questions down into manageable elements and how students can use their knowledge of different topics to solve each element.
