We are offering two options, an AQA course and an Edexcel course. Details for each course are below. These courses are suitable for separate science courses only, rather than dual award.
Chemistry Edexcel IGCSE Course Description
This course will cover some of the most important (and often most misunderstood) topics in Edexcel IGCSE Chemistry. The students will be guided through these topics to help clear up any misunderstandings and fill in any gaps, before testing their knowledge with worksheets and/or exam-style questions.
Chemistry AQA GCSE Course Description
This course will focus on revising some of the key topics in AQA GCSE Chemistry. Within the four sessions the tutor will lead students through the topics to help clear up any misunderstandings and fill in any gaps, before testing their knowledge with worksheets and/or exam-style questions.
Edexcel Course Outline
Day 1: Bonding & structure
We will take a look at the differences between ionic, covalent, and metallic bonding, and how the type of bonding affects the structure and properties of the substance.
Day 2: Calculations involving masses
We will go over calculations involving the mole, Avogadro’s constant, and concentration, as well as discussing the empirical formula and stoichiometry of reactions.
Day 3: Electrolysis
We will take a look at the differences between the electrolysis of a molten electrolyte and the electrolysis of an aqueous electrolyte, and how to predict the products in each case. We will also go over half equations.
Day 4: Organic Chemistry
We will go over the structure and reactions of hydrocarbons (alkanes and alkenes), alcohols, and carboxylic acids, and talk through polymerisation (addition and condensation).
Detailed feedback - An end of course report is sent on completion detailing the student’s achievements and areas for further work.
AQA Course Outline
Day 1: Bonding & Structure
We will go over the structure and development of the Periodic table, recap the differences between ionic, covalent, and metallic bonding, and how the type of bonding affects the structure and properties of the substance. We will also recap giant structures and nanoparticles.
Day 2: Quantitative Chemistry
We will go over calculations involving the mole, Avogadro’s constant, and concentration. This lesson will include practice questions on stoichiometry including empirical formula, atom economy and limiting reagents.
Day 3: Chemical Changes
We will recap reactivity of metals and explain how electrolysis of molten electrolytes and aqueous electrolytes takes place. We will also practice writing half equations in electrolysis and go over related topics including fuel cells and extraction of metals.
Day 4: Organic Chemistry
We will cover crude oil, cracking and homologous series including alkanes, alkenes, alcohols, and carboxylic acids. We will also go over polymerisation, both addition and condensation of esters, amino acids and other naturally occurring polymers.
Detailed feedback: An end of course report is sent on completion detailing the student’s achievements and areas for further work.
Edexcel Course Tutor
This course will be lead by one of our professional tutors, Dominic. Dominic has been a full-time professional tutor at Keystone for five years. Prior to this, he obtained his PhD in Chemistry from University College London, before working as an Analytical Chemist in the food & flavour industry. He has supported Chemistry students of all backgrounds and at various levels. Dominic understands the importance of building a strong foundation and clearing up any misunderstandings, before tackling exam-style questions, and will use this approach throughout this course to really help students improve their understanding and confidence in Chemistry.
AQA Course Tutor
Nicola is an experienced Teacher with a PhD from Birmingham University. She has been in the classroom since 2005 and has spent time as Head of Department as well as an examiner. She now dedicates her time to tutoring and is positive, patient and funny.
