Which are the best grammar schools in Essex? 

Note: Historically, Colchester Royal Grammar School has been one of the top schools in the county, but it was reopened in May 2023 as part of the Thinking Schools Academy Trust for a fresh start. Since up-to-date Ofsted, Progress 8 and Attainment 8 information is not available, we have chosen not to include it in this table. 

What is the admissions process for an Essex grammar school? 

Gaining admission to a grammar school in Essex involves passing the CSSE (Consortium of Selective Schools in Essex) exam, a selective entrance test that assesses whether a grammar school is a suitable fit for a student. The CSSE exam is designed to be challenging and, in 2023, 52.92% of the 4981 students taking the test achieved a passing mark. 

Colchester County High School for Girls is one of the most challenging schools in which to gain a place; selected as a first choice by 463 pupils in 2023, it could only grant a place to 171 of them. King Edward VI Grammar School had the highest entry requirements in 2023, offering the last selective places to students achieving a score of 347 in the CSSE. 

Crafted by experts, the CSSE exam involves two separate tests, one in English and one in Mathematics. The English paper includes a comprehension task and a piece of creative writing to demonstrate skill with vocabulary, spelling, punctuation, grammar, structural devices and originality. The Maths paper is based on the Key Stage 2 maths curriculum, although the questions may be more advanced than the work delivered in primary schools. The two papers are marked out of 60 before being standardised; they are equally weighted and your child will need to achieve a total standardised score of at least 303 to qualify for a place at a CSSE grammar school although some schools have higher qualifying scores. 

The CSSE exam is administered in September during Year 6. Normally, your child will take the test at your first choice grammar school unless its capacity is reached, in which case the CSSE will allocate an alternative test location. It’s important to register early to have the best chance of your child taking the test at your preferred location. 

The results of the CSSE exam are released to parents and guardians in mid-October of Year 6, typically just before the half-term break. Information published on the CSSE website regarding the 2024 admissions scores will help you decide which schools to name on your secondary school common application form. Be aware that a passing score doesn’t guarantee a place at your first choice grammar school. The best Essex grammar schools are often oversubscribed with qualified children, in which case the schools will use different admissions criteria to prioritise groups of children for places, for instance using catchment areas. 

If your child is applying to a grammar school outside of Essex, such as those in Kent or the London Boroughs of Bexley and Bromley, they will need to take a different exam. 

How can I support my child with preparing for the CSSE? 

Preparation for the CSSE is crucial and should start well in advance. Familiarise your child with the test format and types of questions by using practice papers and sample questions available online and in preparatory books.
