Finding the right tutor

for each child

Initial consultation
1

Step 1: Detailed Consultation

Before we can help a student, we often need to spend a significant amount of time learning about the student's requirements. Most consultations are carried out over the phone or on a video call.

Step 2: Academic Assessment (optional)

Students sit our custom-made academic assessments to indicate their level in relation to their peers, and in order to identify suggested areas to work on. Parents also seek academic assessments for their children to determine their general strengths and weaknesses, and decide upon a set of objectives for the course of tuition.

Step 3: Tutor Selection Process

The selection of the tutor is an integral part of our process. Priding ourselves on how well we know the varying strengths of each tutor, we ensure that each decision is informed by the expectation of a successful match between the tutor and student.

We have a monthly reporting system which is used to update parents on an ongoing basis. The monthly report details:

  • the focus of that month’s tutoring
  • the form of assessment used
  • the student's achievements and areas for further work
  • the focus for the coming month

The regular, rigorous reporting of the tutors we represent is frequently commended by parents.

Yes, we offer a trial lesson. With Keystone, you are not required to sign up for any minimum number of lessons, and we offer one-off paid trial lessons so that your child can determine if the fit is right for them. This allows students and parents tutoring through Keystone before committing to regular sessions. The trial lesson is charged at the tutor’s full hourly rate and there is no obligation to continue if you feel it's not the right match.

We have a wealth of experience in assisting students with preparation for competitive grammar schools including The Tiffin Girls' School, Tiffin School, Henrietta Barnett School, Dr Challoner’s High School for Girls and The Latymer School.

11 plus exams present specific challenges to students who are approaching them. The exams often contain content that (while based on the Year 6 syllabus in English and Maths) stretches students beyond what they ordinarily would be taught in class. For the more competitive grammar schools candidates will need to be able to tackle this content successfully in order to stand out. Our tutors will work with your child to create a tailored programme based on their strengths and the grammar schools they are applying to.

If your child is preparing to apply to one of the London Grammas Schools, Keystone Tutors can help. Our team of tutors have extensive experience in preparing students for the 11 plus for London Grammar Schools including The Henrietta Barnett Girls’ School, Queen Elizabeth’s Boys’ School, The Tiffin Girls' School, Tiffin School, The Latymer School and St Michael’s Catholic Grammar School. We can prepare a programme of tuition tailored to the requirements of each school and build on your child’s Maths, English, Verbal and Non-Verbal reasoning skills.

Keystone Tutors are experienced in the intricacies of the 11 plus Kent Test for entrance to Kent Grammar Schools. We work with tutors with a number of years experience in preparing students for the GL Assessment test in Maths, English and Verbal Reasoning.

Keystone’s tutors have an intricate knowledge of the Buckinghamshire Secondary Transfer test and can help prepare your child for GL Assessments verbal, mathematical and non-verbal reasoning test.

Birmingham has 8 selective grammar schools which belong to the Birmingham consortium. These schools are all very popular and often oversubscribed. The Birmingham consortium Grammar School 11 plus exam is created by CEM and there is just 1 exam for children wishing to attend any one of the schools. Keystone represents tutors with experience of the Birmingham CEM and can help prepare students for the exam.

A Guide to Tiffin Boys’ School Admissions

Tiffin School is increasingly becoming one of the most desirable schools in the United Kingdom. Based in Kingston-upon-Thames in South-West London, it is a state-funded, selective grammar school that accepts boys from Year 7 to 11, and its Sixth Form is co-educational. Tiffin Boys' is one of several highly competitive selective grammar schools in London.

Tiffin Boys’ academic prowess is well-documented; it consistently ranks in the top 10 for UK state schools for both GCSE and A Level results (and within the top 3 for boys-only state schools). A huge majority of Tiffin’s leavers move on to leading universities in the United Kingdom, with over 30 per year gaining places at Oxbridge. Leavers have also undertaken various apprenticeships, including the Amazon Degree apprenticeship, with several students even ending up studying in the USA, gaining places at Ivy League universities such as Princeton.

Extracurriculars include a wide variety of sports, clubs and societies. There are over 70 clubs, ranging from Bridge Club to Robotics Club. In terms of sports, Tiffin offers students a rich selection, from rugby to rowing. There is a state-of-the-art sports centre on site, as well as easy access to various offsite facilities.

Year-on-year, Tiffin has become more and more oversubscribed, which has led to a huge amount of competition for places, particularly at the 11+ entry point.

A Guide to Grammar School Entrance Exams

What is a grammar school?

State funded secondary schools which select students based on their scores in competitive entrance exams are known as grammar schools.

Where are grammar schools?

Grammar schools were first created by the Education Act of 1944 but since 1998, no new grammar schools can be established. As a result, there are only around 163 grammar schools in England, and 69 in Northern Ireland; there are no state funded grammar schools in Wales or Scotland.

The highest concentration of grammar schools can be found in Kent, Medway, Essex, Buckinghamshire and Lincolnshire; Gloucestershire, Trafford and Slough have several grammar schools alongside their comprehensive schools and there are a handful of grammar schools in Birmingham, Bournemouth and some boroughs in London.

Parents can explore a full comparison of the top grammar schools in the UK in our detailed national rankings guide.
