In this webinar Jenny (Director, Asia) and Rory (Professional Tutor) talked though boarding school interviews and discussed the common question types and how to prepare international students for these interviews.
Interview Guides
How are boarding school interviews different?
The academic testing provides the school with information so they can decide whether the child will be able to cope with the curriculum and thrive academically.
The interview is then to ascertain suitability and readiness for boarding and whether they would be happy at the school. This is very important, especially for international students, as the child is away from home and the boarding school becomes home.
The evenings and weekends at boarding school tend to be busy and children are expected to get involved and contribute to all aspects of school life.
- Boarding Readiness: Schools are looking for reassurance that the child has carefully considered what boarding means and that they are resilient and emotionally mature.
- Extra-Curricular Interests: There will be a huge number of activities to choose from and schools want to know that a child is willing to get involved and make a positive contribution. You do not need to have a specific talent, willingness to try new things is just as important.
- Contribution to School Life: In the boarding house children will be constantly surrounded by other children and they should be keen to make social connections with others and have a positive impact within the house.
Mock Interviews
We would recommend 2-3 mock interviews to familiarise your child with common interview questions and provide feedback. You want to avoid rehearsing but it is sensible to practice so they are more confident going into the real interview. Do get in touch to organise these.
