I began tutoring in 2010 and went full-time in 2012. Long experience as a tutor and trainer of other tutors has made me highly adaptable. I diagnose each student’s needs and respond with empathy, further tailoring my approach by listening to individual learner preferences and considering different contexts. While I am based in London, my online students attend schools across the globe, from the Brearley School in New York to UWC Dover and UWC East in Singapore.
I have served as Keystone’s Head of English since 2017. I have guided a great many IGCSE, A Level and IB students to achieve their best possible performances in the subject. Over the years, I have also prepared many students for 11+, 13+ and 16+ school entrance assessments. For pre-tests, I build a thorough knowledge of the syllabus and focus on comprehension, grammar and ‘cloze’ procedure. I coach students to adapt to the time-pressured nature of the tests and develop problem-solving skills. My students have won places at a wide range of top independent schools: Eton, Godolphin and Latymer, Harrow, King's College School Wimbledon, Sevenoaks, St Paul's, St Paul's Girls', Tonbridge, Westminster, Winchester, Wycombe Abbey and many more.
I also tutor History and Politics. I began my career as a classroom teacher in these subjects at leading independent schools, including Wellington College and previously James Allen’s Girls’ School, my alma mater. There I further honed the independent time management and communication skills that I was fortunate enough to develop through the tutorial system at Oxford, where I took a joint honours degree in the two subjects.
I have always known the value of education, having been raised by a senior university administrator and a head of department at a leading day school. I attended James Allen’s Girls’ School in south-east London, where I obtained top grades and leaving prizes in A Level English, History, Politics and Philosophy and was awarded the Harvard Book Prize as “an outstanding student in the penultimate year, academically excellent, with exceptional personal qualities, who makes a significant contribution to school or community”. I studied for a BA degree in History and Politics at the University of Oxford and went on to take a Master’s degree in Philosophy. I became a teacher of History and Politics at leading independent schools before moving into full-time private tuition.
“My son said that you had helped a lot, particularly in helping him to know how to think through his answers at interview. He enjoyed his sessions with you and they gave him a lot of confidence. Thank you very much for all your help.”
“I just wanted to let you know that my daughter got an offer from 6 of the 7 schools she applied to, including Godolphin! She will be going to Godolphin next year. Thank you for your help, which I am sure contributed to her success.”
“Alice is an excellent tutor. She had a great rapport with my son. He was able to develop his powers of argument and analysis through discussing Philosophy topics with her. Alice was well-organised, diligent, dedicated and rigorous. She has been instrumental in helping him achieve his A grades and his place at Bristol University to study English and Philosophy.”
“I know that my son has really enjoyed his lessons with you and I am incredibly grateful for your support and hard work. Politics has clearly sparked a real interest, as he frequently came out of lessons saying 'Mum, did you know…'. and then recounted something that he had discussed with you.”
I welcome the focus on the individual learner that is a central feature of tutoring, and very much enjoy engaging in the lively dialogue and individualised feedback that enables my tutees to grow in confidence as learners. I bring enthusiasm and energy to my tutoring. Thanks to my previous work as a school teacher, my approach to tutoring is also informed, where relevant, by a sound understanding of examination requirements.
My greatest passions outside the classroom are music and (of course) reading. When my schedule permits, I also love to travel. London is still my favourite city, though, and one of the things I love most about living here is the range of museums and galleries to explore.
