John
John is a passionate mathematician who tutors alongside his PhD studies at UCL. He helps students with Maths at all secondary levels, including university entrance tests.
Great teachers should always strive to build excellent relationships with their students, which will impact engagement, motivation, and ultimately their achievement.
As a full-time PhD student as well as a personal tutor, I have significant expertise in helping students achieve high grades in GCSE and A-Level Maths and Further Maths, STEP, and MAT, using my mathematics background to help place topics in their broader context.
In addition, I am perfectly placed to help the brightest students who may not be challenged sufficiently in class. For example, I may teach a GCSE student some more advanced material, which will help them in the future as well as provide some context for their classroom studies. Alternatively, I may expose a student to 'competition style' mathematics, which can be an incredible way of broadening their horizons.
I also have extensive experience in using a range of techniques to help students understand foundational content at both GCSE and A-Level. With an encyclopaedic knowledge of every exam board's syllabus, I know exactly how to get the most out of every student, by ensuring solid foundations as well as helping students understand exactly what exam questions are looking for.
I have experience tutoring the following exams:
- GCSE and IGCSE Maths and Further Maths (all exam boards)
- A Level Maths and Further Maths (all exam boards)
- IB Mathematics
- STEP
- MAT
- TMUA
I am an aspiring mathematician and lecturer who will be starting a PhD in mathematics at UCL in October. I graduated from UCL last summer with an MSci degree in Mathematics. I have been tutoring extensively for 5 years now, with over a thousand hours of tutoring experience. I take the discipline of teaching as seriously as I do mathematics itself, meaning I put in the effort to ensure every lesson is as effective as it can possibly be, taking into account the latest science.
Great teachers should always strive to build excellent relationships with their students, which will impact engagement, motivation, and ultimately their achievement. This is why I am always looking to get to know my students - understanding their interests and motivations - as well as any challenges they may have had with their education in the past.
As a dedicated tutor with years of experience, I strive to make every lesson as effective as it can possibly be. Beginning with an assessment and discussion about goals, I always agree with my student a clear, structured, learning plan.
I ground my lessons in experience, educational best practice, and the most recent science of learning and pedagogy, with a consistent focus on learning objectives.
In every discipline, but especially mathematics, lack of foundational knowledge can be a real hindrance. This is why I take a highly systematic approach to filling in gaps in a students knowledge, and adopt what's called a 'mastery' approach to education. This means that I do not move on to the next topic unless I am satisfied they properly understand the current one, which I assess through constant assessment and progressively more challenging problems.
Lessons themselves are based on the principle that 'active learning' is far more effective method than passively listening. I implement this by providing constant opportunities for engagement with the student, and always aim to guide the student to the answer, rather giving away the answer too quickly.
I always try to ensure a student is engaging with their own learning process, meaning that they 'learn how to learn'. This means I often spend time teaching basic study techniques, as well as teaching strategies to identify their own mistakes. This is accompanied by constant, specific feedback on the student's progress, which can help the student understand their strengths and weaknesses.
Finally, and most importantly, I want to stimulate my student's curiosity and love for the subject. This can vary from providing students with 'easy wins' to avoid frustration, to using my own background in mathematics to provide broader and deeper context for the mathematics they are studying.
I am currently spending my time doing preparatory work for my PhD which starts in October 2025, alongside tutoring my existing private clients. I have quite broad intellectual interests, and spend much of my spare time reading books about history and politics.
