I began tutoring during my final years at Magdalen College School, when I worked with GCSE students across the full range of subjects, to support them with coursework and exam preparation. This involved working through their schoolwork together to identify the key areas of struggle, before working with both the student and their subject teacher to provide a clear and concise learning framework to catch them up to speed, and ensure learning targets were met within the deadlines.
I continued tutoring during my time at university, when at the end of my first year (during lockdown), I helped an A-level student at my former school prepare for his Mathematics, Biology and Chemistry A-levels. In addition, in the final year of my Bachelor's degree, I helped a first-year Biomedical Sciences student get to grips with Biochemistry.
I was born in Oxford where I attended Magdalen College School. I took A-levels in Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology achieving three A*/A grades. After Magdalen, I read Biomedical Sciences for my bachelor's degree (1st class) at the University of Bristol, where I focused on biochemistry, pharmacology and neuroscience. In my final year, I supported a first-year Biomedical Sciences student in getting to grips with the basics of Biochemistry. After leaving University, I worked as a Project Coordinator for a London-based Health Economics and Outcomes Research (HEOR) consultancy, gaining key communication and presentation skills which have been invaluable in my role as a tutor. After spending two years in HEOR consultancy, I returned to university to pursue economics. Having been awarded a distinction in my Graduate Diploma in Economics from Birkbeck College, I am undertaking a Master's in Economics at the London School of Economics.
By creating a safe and friendly learning environment, I encourage students to ask questions, make mistakes, and build confidence in their abilities. Through careful planning of each lesson, I aim to deliver lessons that are not only relevant and engaging, but tailored to how the student learns best. I find setting clear, achievable targets and having regular progress check-ins is the best way to help students stay motivated and on track, making sure every session contributes to their long-term academic goal.
With subjects such as Mathematics and Chemistry, where learning must be applied more flexibly, I work to help students understand the reasoning behind the rule rather than simply focusing on rote memorisation. I believe this helps students garner a deeper understanding and better long-term retention of concepts.
Alongside my work as a tutor, I am a Master's student at the London School of Economics studying Economics. I have a love for long dog walks and sport, which I find helps me de-stress, relax and recharge, and I currently play cricket and football through the university. When at home, I am always trying out new recipes and techniques in the kitchen, and love nothing better than sharing this (whatever the result!) with friends and family around the table.
