As a teacher, I have used many different approaches to help students understand the concepts involved in studying mathematics.

  • GCSE Maths
  • MYP Maths
  • IB Maths
  • IB Further Maths
  • UKMT competitions
  • STEP Maths
  • Mathematics Admissions Test (MAT)

I have been teaching GCSE mathematics, MYP Mathematics and all the IBDP mathematics courses (Applications and Interpretations and Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches), and both Standard and Higher Levels, for 11 years in the UK and in Italy. I have also helped with the old IB Mathematical studies and IB Further mathematics courses. I have been tutoring for even longer, initially face to face, but more recently online with students from across Europe leading to their success in GCSE, iGCSE, and IBDP Higher Level Mathematics.
As a teacher I run maths clubs for the UKMT competitions and for those wanting to prepare for the STEP and MAT tests, I recently organised a competition for the IB International schools in Italy attended by 9 different schools and 90 competitors.

Originally from Norfolk, I studied mathematics at Hull (BSc), Strathclyde (MSc) and City Universities (PhD) and had a post-doctoral research position at UCL, London. For the next 14 years I was a Business Analyst and Project Manager implementing software trading systems for software houses, exchanges, and banks both directly and as a consultant, giving me the opportunity to live in London, Germany and Hong Kong. Tutoring the children of friends in mathematics for GCSE encouraged me to become a teacher; I have taught GCSE and IB Diploma Standard and Higher levels for 11 years in the UK and latterly in International schools in Florence and Rome, Italy.
I currently live in Rome with my wife while our three children (who all had me as a teacher at some time) are at Universities in the UK.

As a teacher, I have used many different approaches to help students understand the concepts involved in studying mathematics. The use of technology to enhance understanding and simplify difficult ideas is something which I believe in and have run workshops for teachers to help them with this. I also think that humour is important: afterall maths is fun, even if maths based jokes are notoriously bad. However, the biggest barrier to learning is a lack of confidence. As a teacher and tutor, I see it as my role to demystify the topics being studied, giving space for students to show what they know already and how close they are to making the next breakthrough in their learning. One of my favourite moments is after a student gives me their own explanation of their understanding and then exclaims “but that was easy, I thought it was much more complicated than that”.

I enjoy skiing, hiking and always like to cook. I play the piano to relax and the guitar for fun. I have been a keen photographer since University days.
