Matthew
Matthew is an accomplished Maths and Science tutor who has held numerous academic positions. He currently tutors alongside scientific research. Matthew's teaching incorporates real world examples to bring lessons to life!
I understand the importance of exam preparation and of working towards specific outcome-oriented goals.
I have over 10 years' tutoring experience, including both in person and online teaching with students in the UK, Hong Kong and Singapore.
I have taught students of varying ages and abilities, and with varying levels interest in science and mathematics, but my goal is always to ''meet the student where they're at''. Focusing on concrete progress today builds confidence and helps relive the stress that students all too often feel when confronted with big challenges, like preparing for exams or school and university admissions.
Subjects I have previously taught include:
- 11+ Maths & Science
- 13+ Maths & Science
- GCSE Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths & Add. Math.
- IB-MYP Maths & Physics
- A Level Maths & Physics
- IB Maths & Physics
- STEP Maths & Physics
- Maths & Physics for University Admissions Tests
- Undergraduate Maths & Physics
I graduated from from Imperial College with a Master’s in Physics (1st class, hons.) in 2004 and completed a Master’s in Mathematics at the University of Cambridge in 2006. For my PhD, I studied cosmology with Prof. Bernard Carr at Queen Mary, University of London, graduating in 2010. Between 2011 and 2024 I held a number of academic positions at universities and research institutes in Asia and Europe, including a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Tokyo in Japan, an Associate Professorship at Sun Yat-Sen University in China, and Visiting Fellowships at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore and the Frankfurt Institute for Advanced Studies in Germany. Since 2020, I have held an Adjunct Faculty position in the Department of Physics at Babes-Bolyai University in Romania. Though I am now based in the UK, I continue to work remotely as a research scientist, specialising in quantum information theory, high-energy physics and quantum gravity.
I understand the importance of exam preparation and of working towards specific outcome-oriented goals. With that said, I prefer to do more than just ''teach to test''. On the one hand, this involves building up a long-term relationship with the student, and their family, before the critical test-prep period begins. On the other hand, it involves introducing the student, wherever possible, to some of the beauty and wonder to be found in the exploration of science and mathematics. My goal is to help them develop the skills, and confidence, to explore these topics independently.
I like to combine teaching (tutoring) with active scientific research and am currently engaged in a number of long-term research projects with colleagues in the UK and EU.
When not doing science, I enjoy traveling, learning new languages, working out and playing musical instruments (though I'm not very good at the latter).
