David
David is a highly experienced physics teacher who has a wealth of experience working in schools, as well as with students at undergraduate and postgraduate level. He aims to bring physics to life, using both real world examples and interactive teaching methods.
Over my many years of teaching experience at GCSE, A-level and undergraduate level I've gained a wide understanding of the misconceptions that students have on many Physics topics.

I have over 40 years of teaching experience at postgraduate, undergraduate and school level. I was a lecturer and senior lecturer in Physics at the University of Surrey in Guildford for over 20 years. I ran the undergraduate laboratory for first-year students and taught undergraduate electrical circuit analysis, thermodynamics, and semiconductor characterisation. I taught semiconductor materials and device physics at the postgraduate level and supervised PhD students. I supervised undergraduate and MSc projects and tutored in the professional training programme.
I moved to Charterhouse School in Godalming as Head of Physics, and, with my six colleagues in the department, we organised and ran the Edexcel IGCSE Physics programme for all students up to Y11. For the Y12-13 “Specialists” who studied Physics each year, we taught A-Level and IBDP Physics. I also introduced optional GCSE Electronics and Computer Science courses and coordinated the school’s Academic IT programme for several years.
I have a BSc in Physics, an MSc in Microwave Engineering and a PhD in Semiconductor Physics. I taught and undertook research at the University of Surrey as a lecturer/senior lecturer for 18 years before becoming Head of Physics at Charterhouse. I taught and ran a department of seven teachers for 17 years before retiring in 2023. During much of that time, I tutored the children of friends, work colleagues, and others in person and online. During COVID-19, I developed my own ''learning glass'' to overcome some of the limitations of online teaching caused by the reduced interaction associated with online education, especially in large classes. Since retirement, I've continued to develop the learning glass and tutor online students in IGCSE and A-level Physics.
Over my many years of teaching experience at GCSE, A-level and undergraduate level I've gained a wide understanding of the misconceptions that students have on many Physics topics. I like to try to use everyday analogies and examples to demonstrate how to think about problems and develop strategies for problem solving. Key to student success is a willingness to test their knowledge by discussing and tackling a wide variety of problems both from the course they are studying and from everyday life. I have found that a key to enhanced engagement online is for the teaching and discussions to be as interactive as possible. The learning glass is invaluable tool for fostering this engagement.
I'm retired from teaching at Charterhouse, although I still maintain contact with the Physics department. I tutor, play golf when the weather is fine, read, practice vegan cooking, and visit historic sites in London and elsewhere. I also like to travel and spend a month or so in Europe each year, mainly in France, Italy and Spain.
