As a compassionate and dedicated educator, with seven years of experience tutoring, and working in six diverse schools (including mainstream, SEND and independent schools), my instructional focus centres around various curricula, with an emphasis on preparing students for the competitive 4+, 7+, and 11+ admissions processes. I equip students not only academically but with the essential life skills that align with the values of London’s top schools. Successfully tutoring students for admission into renowned institutions has been a great source of pride, with notable examples being: Eltham College, Colfe’s School, Highgate, James Allen's Girls, City of London, City of London School for Girls, King’s College, St Paul’s, North Bridge House, Francis Holland, Queen’s College, Wetherby, South Hampstead, Channing School, Godolphin and Latymer, Francis Holland, Cobham Hall, Lady Nafisa and Queens College (some of these with academic scholarships). Therefore, my students are in capable hands, guided by a tutor experienced adept in navigating the high pressured assessment processes.
Providing support in interview preparation is another essential aspect of my services. My approach involves boosting confidence and self-presentation, by strategically coaching my students towards answering questions thoughtfully and showcasing their skills and experiences. Through techniques such as role-play, detailed recalling of past events and delivering speeches, I aim to refine communication, empathy, active listening and questioning. In addition to tuition, I am also a private pre-admissions assessor and report writer, offering insight into student progress, gaps in learning and can advise on plans for future tuition.
Further, my extensive experience in SEND, particularly with Autism Spectrum and Challenging Behaviour, positions me as a well-rounded educator. As a tutor, homeschool teacher, assessor and report writer, I bring a multifaceted skill set to support the holistic and academic development students.
Once I had achieved my BSc in Psychology, with a research placement year at the Institute of Psychiatry, I began my teaching journey at North Bridge House Prep School. Starting as a Learning Support Assistant, I was offered the opportunity to tutor students from the school. Delivering one-to-one support was incredibly rewarding as it allowed me to dedicate my full attention and expertise to a single student for an entire session. This level of focused support yielded immediate and tangible results, with each passing minute contributing to the growth of my students' confidence and attainment.
Progressing to the role of internal Cover Teacher for Years 3 to 8, aligned with my pursuit of Specific Learning Difficulties Training. This was inspired by my first encounter with a student with Dyslexia. Her adaptability, enthusiasm and unique perspective on the world, profoundly inspired me. Additionally, my niece, with Global Developmental Delay and the rare Phelan-McDermid Syndrome, has further shaped my journey. Despite her cognitive diversity and social challenges resembling autism, she has exceeded all expectations. I am grateful for the positive influence these experiences have had on me, facilitating awareness, inspiration and compelling me to facilitate success in all students, irrespective of challenges, paving the way for their journey towards a bright future.
Upon qualification, I transitioned into the role of Learning Support Teacher. Subsequently, I completed my teacher training, attaining Qualified Teacher Status and a Postgraduate degree in Education. Throughout my career, I have taught at six schools and coached successful outcomes in all of my students as a tutor since 2016, specialising in English, Maths, SEND, Dyslexia & SpLD and preparation for 4+, 7+, and 11+ assessments.
“I think the tutorial sessions helped me out with learning the difference between an verb and a adverb and helped with my spelling and grammar. They also helped me write longer amounts and also helped me how to word things properly rather than using an informal tone. Thanks.”
“Shanice has been tutoring English to my daughter for a few months in preparation of 11+ exams. Shanice is a patient, kind and encouraging tutor and my daughter very much enjoys and looks forward to her weekly lessons. Since working with Shanice, my daughter’s confidence and attitude towards English has improved significantly, and her school report shows positive progression, both in terms of attainment and effort. I would without hesitation recommend Shanice as a tutor.”
“Shanice is a great teacher, she has good tips, she makes the lessons fun and she is cool. Since starting her lessons, I have been able to think of ideas quicker, I felt improvements in how I share my ideas in a better way and I feel happier in class. I also feel more confident and I offer my opinions more often than before.”
“We are absolutely delighted to share our experience working with Shanice, who supported our twins through their 11+ preparation. Thanks to her exceptional guidance, dedication, and thoughtful approach, both children not only did well on their exams but secured places at their top-choice schools. From the outset, Shanice demonstrated a deep understanding of the 11+ process. She tailored her teaching to each child’s personality and learning style, making every session engaging, structured, and confidence building. Her clear explanations, targeted practice, and calm encouragement made an enormous difference, particularly in the more challenging areas of maths and reasoning. What truly set her apart, however, was the comprehensive support she provided beyond the written exams.”
As a compassionate and creative educator, I employ an innovative and organised tutoring approach, both online or in-person, with a dedicated commitment to inclusively assisting all students in reaching their full potential. My communication style is characterised by kindness and empathy, enabling me to respond to students in a relatable manner and adapt to their individual challenges with sensitivity and systematic support.
In my teaching I practice many evidence-based pedagogical approaches including Maths Mastery, Phonics, Talk 4 Writing, Reciprocal Reading, Zones of Regulation and more, always facilitating metacognition through good questioning using Bloom’s Taxonomy as a framework.
In preparing students for the school entrance exams, my approach encompasses a comprehensive curriculum tailored to key subjects, fostering critical thinking and problem-solving. Through engaging materials and interactive activities, I ensure a dynamic learning experience, coupled with regular assessments for individualised progress tracking. Emphasising exam-specific skills, time management, and familiarity with the exam process, I equip students not only with knowledge but also the strategies needed for success. Additionally, I can integrate interview preparation to instil confidence, ensuring students approach interviews positively, competently, and thus, shine brightly in a group.
Every student possesses the potential for greatness and I am committed to supporting them in surpassing expectations. I am proud of the impact I have on my students as they embark on the enlightening and empowering journey of mastering their education, setting the stage for successful futures.
I am passionate about various performing arts disciplines, such as dance, aerial circus, gymnastics, and drama. My physical pursuits have extended to diverse activities, including climbing, parkour, contortion, flying trapeze, and Capoeira. Fun Fact: I performed dance in the London 2012 Olympic closing ceremonies! In addition to my enthusiasm for performing arts, I find joy in creative expressions like painting, illustration, design and crafting of knitwear garments - especially at Christmas time. I love to travel and hope to be able to say ''I have seen the whole world'' one day. Lastly, I can solve the Rubik's cube and teach it!
