I have tutored all three sciences and maths to hundreds of students now, and really enjoy teaching these subjects at all levels. If a student is particularly bright I have found that they will find it enjoyable to go beyond the syllabus and be stretched a bit with novel ideas and concepts. This can be a really fun way for students to stay engaged with the task of learning exam syllabuses - seeing the bigger picture, and how it can be applied.

I've also tutored a lot in the American system (chiefly for students at the American School of London), and am very familiar with every course on offer in maths and science for middle and high school. It is extremely different from the UK system in terms of approach and often content, and so building particular expertise in this, I have found invaluable.

I have prepared students for scholarship exams for Eton, Westminster and other extremely competitive schools, and have also prepared students for Oxbridge entrance.

Alongside weekly lessons, I particularly like teaching students intensely over a short period, say in preparation for an exam, or for home-schooling, several times a week, or in large blocks, and have also tutored in this way online too. I have done a lot of this over the years.

I graduated from the University of Cambridge with a degree in Natural Sciences in 2010, with a 1st for my BA and went on to do a masters there. I took courses in Maths, Physics, Geology, Biology, and the History and Philosophy of Science.

I grew up in the leafy countryside near Lewes, East Sussex. I was always strong academically at school, and loved the sciences and maths, but also had a huge passion for music and English literature. At GCSE I achieved 11 A*s at GCSE and 5 As at As/A level (back before A*s were a thing!).

Since graduating from Cambridge I have worked as a tutor for students aged 5 to 21, across a huge range of backgrounds and abilities, from top performers getting scholarships at the best schools in the country, to those who need confidence boosting and to be retaught the basics.

I am friendly, patient, and encouraging, but I do expect students to concentrate and give their best, whatever their level. I try to teach with a lot of examples, especially using past exam paper questions, and encourage students to think through questions for themselves - ultimately I'm teaching them not just techniques, and content, but how to have the confidence to approach any question they might face. When the student could teach me how to do it, that's when I know they really understand!

I find being very consistent and deliberate in approach is a useful way to build structure for students, and it allows them to develop for themselves a calm sense of ease when approaching questions, rather than panicking or blanking when something challenging or new comes up.

It is also really important to establish what is motivating the student to learn and do well, whether it's getting into a particular school, achieving a particular target, or just to develop a greater sense of security and ease with their school work.

I am also an opera director and classical musician, which can sometimes be a nice point of contact with students, if that is an interest for them! I am fully committed to continuing tutoring activities for the foreseeable future, and enjoy it very much as part of my work activities.
