I started tutoring when I was 14, helping young children. Realising teaching was something I really enjoyed I then taught GCSE as soon as I had finished my own and taught A levels while at university. While studying Engineering at Oxford University I kept up with some tutoring during the term time but mostly tutored at home during the holidays.
After completing my Engineering MSc, I wanted to stretch myself and try some academic writing. To this end, I tutored full-time in London to raise funds to complete a second master's. During this time, I helped with intense revision in the lead-up to exams as well as taking on a challenging home-schooling role, getting an A* in A-level maths in just 6 months.
I ended up at UEA studying Climate Change and tutoring almost full-time including working with a local school helping disadvantaged children in groups of 3.
Having enjoyed tutoring so much I decided to commit full-time and started taking on long-term home-schooling roles as well as afterschool support.
Through my many years of tutoring, I have helped students across the world. This has helped me adapt my teaching style to different working cultures as well as to cover many exam boards. I have also had the fortune to help some great students who have struggled with SEN.
I have over 15000 hours taught including paid and voluntary teaching in and out of schools.
I have been tutoring individuals and groups for over 8 years as both paid and voluntary work. I love to teach Maths and Physics to children of all ages and abilities, sculpting my lessons around the individuals' needs. I have always found engaging with my pupils easy. Being young, and having recently been in education, helps me to understand any problems my students encounter and find intuitive ways to help them understand the topic.
“I contacted Andrew over concerns leading up to my A-level Physics and Maths. He was approachable from the start and put me at my ease. He is extremely knowledgeable and is able to explain problems in a clear and understandable way. Andrew gave me confidence in Physics and Maths which I previously lacked and with his help, I passed my A-levels with the required grades. I would highly recommend Andrew as a tutor.”
“Andrew comes highly recommended, he tutored my son for two years through his final years at secondary and the start of A level. He is extremely professional and totally gets the full potential from the student. I believe from Andrews tutorials without a doubt my son moved from failing to excelling in this subject.”
“Andrew has been tutoring my son in preparation for his A level physics exams. Due to Covid restrictions and online teaching provisions my son had fallen behind in physics. Andrew has been an exceptional tutor, making sure my son filled in any gap in his knowledge. His lessons have been fun and engaging and he has made my son grow in confidence in preparation for his exams.”
“My elder son has been successful in gaining an offer to study Mechanical Engineering at Imperial College London. He wanted hard technical questions to drill through to best prepare for Imperial interview and Andrew stretched him with exactly that and provided invaluable coaching on how to steer the conversations towards his area of strengths & knowledge. Andrew also helped refine my son's personal statement at the onset as he went through it to form his questions for the mock interviews.”
When tutoring I encourage an understanding of base principles in order to build confidence and problem-solving skills. I like to set my pupils short homework worksheets to highlight any difficulties and to encourage comfort with a wide variety of problems. This will set them up to excel in future education and exams.
I encourage problem-solving skills so that even if the subject isn't the student's focus, it will help them in all other aspects of life, as well as being an essential skill for exam success.
My enthusiasm for lessons is a key aspect that makes them enjoyable which has been remarked upon by students. I have a genuine passion for Maths and Physics and love finding challenging problems or unique perspectives to help my students.
When accepting a long-term tutoring role I make sure to have an organised and structured plan that is shared with both the student and parents so that progress can be tracked and give the student a real sense of direction and achievement.
I have all the technology required to make online learning as interactive and accessible as possible. Including specialist software, graphics pad, reliable internet, and high-spec computer equipment.
I currently live in Wells with my wife and young daughter. When I have time we climb, go to the gym, and play games.
