I spent a year working for Highflyers Education, a tutoring company based in Kent. I gave 1 on 1 lessons in Science and Maths to students from years 7-11. I also tutored small groups of students in preparation for their 11+ examinations.
Additionally, I spent my final year of secondary school tutoring AS-Level Psychology students. This would include a combination of 1 on 1 lessons, or lessons to small groups of students who were struggling with their attainment in Psychology. This role also involved me setting numerous homework tasks for students, as well as preparing and marking practice examination questions. I have also tutored students in A-Level Psychology whilst at Keystone, helping students with both content revision and exam preparation across a variety of different exam boards.
Since working with Keystone. I have tutored individuals of a variety of ages and in several different subjects. I have tutored many students in the three sciences, this includes from 11+ Level Science, GCSE Biology, Chemistry and Physics and finally A-Level Biology. I have worked with students on syllabus revision as well as exam preparation in order to best prepare them for any upcoming GCSE or A-Level exams. I have also tutored many students in 13+ Science in preparation for entrance examinations. This has included helping students prepare for exams for lots of different schools including Eton, Tonbridge, Wellington, Winchester College etc.
I have also tutored 11+ English, Maths and reasoning to students in preparation for upcoming school entrance examinations. This has included students from a variety of different starting levels, and also students applying for lots of different schools, including but not limited to Eton, Winchester, Harrow, St Paul's, Westminster, Sevenoaks, Godolphin & Latymer and Oundle. I have then helped students in Maths through KS3, as well as 13+/14+ entrance exams.
Whilst at Keystone, I have tutored many students online due to COVID. I have also tutored online through tutoring students in various different countries all over the world (E.g. Hong Kong, Singapore, Columbia etc.). This has provided me with invaluable experience in online tutoring. I have completed hundreds of lessons online and am a firm believer that it can be as effective as face-to-face tutoring.
Born and raised in Ashford, Kent, I am a middle child of 3 with an older brother and younger sister. I attended secondary school at The Norton Knatchbull Grammar School. At school I took 3 A-Levels, achieving 2 A*s in Biology and Psychology, as well as an A in Geography. I went on to further my education at the University of Leeds, where I studied Zoology and achieved a First-class mark. It was at University that I realised my desire to stay within education, specifically within a teaching role.
I have since lived in London for the past few years, having moved in the summer of 2020.
“X was very happy with how the lessons went. He particularly liked the tempo of the lessons and the obvious attention and forethought that went into planning the lessons. X is hard to motivate with science and with previous tutors it has been a real struggle to get him to do the lessons but with you he never moaned or complained and logged on quite happily so thank you very much!”
“My son went into the lessons hating English and reading, now he even seems to enjoy it! Thank you for all your help and guidance throughout the lessons, you've been a real helping hand.”
“Lessons with Ben were such a huge confidence boost for our son, his 11+ exams went great! Thank you so much Ben!”
“Ben was fantastic, my daughter was very happy with how the lessons went and feels a lot more confident for her exams now. I have noticed a big change in her confidence when doing her revision since her lessons with him.”
I am a passionate and caring tutor and this is evident in my lessons. I aim to build upon a student’s current interests and strengths. Making my lessons engaging and interactive is a top priority for me. I believe this is the best way to make learning something that students find enjoyable whilst still something that is helping them achieve their academic goals. I also strive to help disengaged students develop a newfound appreciation for a subject (even if they may have struggled with it in the past). Furthermore, I like to ensure that students are confident in their own abilities as well as excited about the prospects of developing new skills and knowledge.
Every student is unique, both in their interests and in their learning styles. I therefore believe in pulling from a variety of learning resources and techniques to create a style of tutoring catered towards each unique student. Finding out how each student learns most effectively is a challenge I thoroughly enjoy. This I think is the best way to ensure that each students’ experience with learning is both enjoyable and effective, with this benefiting them not just in their lessons with me, but in their independent learning in the future.
Outside of my full-time role as a tutor, my greatest passion has to be food. This of course includes the preparation of it, but most importantly, the eating! You will therefore often find me dining out at one of the many restaurants in London or exploring the different food markets. I also spend a lot of my time experimenting with different foods and recipes in the kitchen.
I am also very dedicated to fitness. I play football, tennis, golf, enjoy going running and to the gym. I have completed several half marathons, and once completed two half marathons back to back in what some people have since described as a full marathon. Whilst the running bug remains, my legs have decided that they need a few more years to recover before running another marathon, so for now I will be sticking to halves.
I also enjoy watching live football and have been a regular supporter of the mighty AFC Wimbledon for 12 years.
